You should review the facts. Cook ran her best Junior time in college. I think Tuohy could have run a 5000 in college if she wanted.
she did run several 5000s as a FR she was just not back into good form yet (15:50 ish as I recall) following missing all of the running in 2020. I guess she could have run a 5000 at BU when she ran the 3000 (in Dec 21), but that was the choice.

The way I see it if Tuohy runs 8:40 at Millrose she might overtake Schweitzer in WA 5000 ranking - depending on finish position and how many WA points that place is worth at that event........She is currently carrying an 8:59/2nd place finish at NCAA for 1170 points. fwiw

Be patient on this one, it's very hard for distance runners to win the Bowerman, as sprinters, hurdlers and jumpers 1) more easily score pts in up to 4 events at NCAA, 2) are often world class in college.

Exactly. The last two Bowerman winners were Abby Steiner and Athing Mu as kind of a benchmark of what it takes to win this award. Both competed in more than one event and had several CRs during their college seasons. But there are currently no distance runners even on the Bowerman watchlist. Tuohy should be on that at least as she leads the NCAA in mile and 5k right now, probably 3k soon.

01/21: 13M total with a 15km race on a very hilly course. I run this every year to celebrate my birthday and winter. 1:24:20; 4th in age division. Fastest on this course by 1:43. this week:
M: 9M easy on hilly out and back @ 11:15 pace
T: 6.5M with 9x:30 hill repeats in da middle
W: 10.2M @ 11:08 pace. Big, cold wind
Th: 6.6M on treadmill @ 11:00 pace
F: off
Sat: 16M on hilly course @ 11:08 pace. No oomph. S: 30:00 treadmill - legs have forgotten how to run a straight line on the ‘mill. Needs more PT for that. Enjoy the week

So with Schweitzer having 1170 points…. I’m hearing more and more of the relevance of the points. However, is there something I’ve been missing? Are athletes supposed to have a certain # of points or something to make it Worlds, etc? (Instead of a qualifying time as I’ve been accustomed to, etc.).

Cliff notes version: World Athletics recently lowered the world standard for the olympics a crazy amount for all events making it super hard. Mens 10k 27 flat, for example.
They made it purposely difficult. However, runners can also bypass having 'the standard' by racking up points and they want people to meet the qualifier by having points.
