Funny stuff, but I hope you are kidding. The opposite is most likely true: a big believer in these concepts thought he was doing "good" by motivating us lazy LetsRunners with an inspirational story of long slow runs, high mileage, progressive runs, and minimalist trainers. I mean of course these is some truth behind these theories (look at the REAL people on thread, including Mr "Hide" ), but making up a phony success story DOES only undermine the theories (with THAT I will agree with you, but I highly doubt it was intentional).

So Bruce, or Rojo or JK........why is this mythical NikeFreeMe guy now "Hide-ing" ??? Has he turned back into "Dr Jekil" ? After all, he did seem to have a split personality !

(hey maybe that IS the truth. Bruce Hyde is not really a high mileage/progressive-run experiment/success story, but something JK cooked up his lab! "ithaca_runner" is really Bruce, but "NIKEFREEME" is the evil Dr Jekyl!!)

He could stil be legit, I'm not counting him out yet.

The real question is how did Bruce Hyde have time for all those miles with his recurring role on Star Trek?

I'm still confused as to why it matters who the guy is. I have no idea who he is but i have no reason to doubt him. I can assure you that I am real and did nearly the exact same thing as him and had nearly identical results. My speed even improved after training high for a while. Anyways, why do you guys care who he is? Go train like he said and you will run fast.

In all due respect, Bruce, training being as individualistic as it is, a "one off" case such as yourself is grounds for an hypothesis, while another independent example (which NFM would be, if true) is a step furhter towards proof. One of the biggest points always brought up in the (overblown) "Coe v Lydiard" debates is that one must weigh the success of one athlete (Coe) vs. the success of many (Lydiard's boys).

In training as in science, replicability counts. Has the experiment succeeded in independent application? We are left in doubt.

Maybe we should all attempt to prove the theory right or wrong by replicating the experiment ourselves. I'm up for it. Who else is with me here?

i am up for it too. i used to train like this when i had no idea what i was doing. i ran easy on easy days and if i felt good i would run hard, i used to call them 60 minute tempo runs. no real structured workouts and ended up running faster than my college times. i didnt run as many miles as free me, or race as fast, but could see it working. now that i see why it works i have been reinspired to train this way. a few weeks ago when this thread started i upped miles, slowed down and added progression runs. aiming for 100 minutes a day, now 120 and going to go for 140.

Um, that's the WHOLE point: "nike free me" may not have run that many miles or raced as fast as he said EITHER. We don't know if his story is true. I can't see why he would not want to confirm the truth of his story in some verifiable way, if it is true, since it inspiring and full of success. But maybe it's a sham.

just like the other guy said: it is like that author from Oprah's book club, who wrote "A million little pieces." Is that a real inspiring tale of recovery and retribution, or a mediocre melodramatic piece of imagination??? The same goes for "Nike Free Me."

Hey, he can get even more love from LetsRun crowd and more success by shutting up all us doubters by proving his existence. OR.....he can be laughed at for beig a liar. It's up to him. But his silence and inconsistencies have already spoken volumes to me.

yeah, my times would be consistent with the mileage i was doing compared to his. i am planning on upping the mileage and see what happens.

Thanks for posting your story on here; I know a lot of us had already heard it but it is always great to hear it again. You make a good point when you say it doesn't matter if Nike Free Me is real or not. The fact that you showed similar improvement with similar training is enough to make that argument moot.

To bring this thread back to talking about training, I was wondering how long people think it takes for the high mileage to actually show results. When I've drastically increased my mileage in the summer for XC it usually doesn't improve my results much in XC but usually much later during indoor/going into outdoor.

I think that depends on what distance you are racing, how high you get and how fast and long you drop your mileage for. I tend to run very well when I am at high mileage, and I don't like to taper for more than a couple of weeks, but that's just me. I also tend to like the longer races (i.e. 10 miles plus) and not so much the shorter races. So my experiences are very different from yours. When I used to run xc in HS/college, I usually didn't feel very good at all during the season, but I still improved year after year with my PR's, but I noticed esp. in the offseason when I hit the miles again that I was much stronger than the last training cycle. But everyone is different...
