Certain people cannot comprehend the idea that when given the choice between two cultures, someone might not immediately and without reservation proclaim America as the be-all and end-all of civilazation. That's not possible. If China doesn't allow dual citizenship, they can't declare someone a Chinese citizen if they hold a different citizenship as well.

But both Gu and China have been avoiding giving direct answers regarding her citizenship. So it's also very possible that China is ignoring it's own laws and allowing Gu to retain her Chinese citizenship without giving up her US citizenship.

Not exactly. China considers you a natinoal at birth, but you only get citizenship if you don't have citizenship somewhere else and youer Chinese parent isn't a permanent residence somewhere else. Eileen was born American and her mom is a permanent resident so the at-birth regulations wouldn't apply to her.
What's likely happening is China needs winter Olympians, and has allowed all of these people to compete without citizenship, using their "nationalism" laws as a bypass for this 3-week period. There's no way Jake Chelios has reenounced being American and plans to move to Shanghai for the rest of his life.

It appears that the IOC gives countries some flexibility in which athletes a country claims are eligible to represent that country. I agree that Jake Chelios isn't going to live in China for the rest of his life.
In any case, whatever the exact reason is for Eileen Gu being able to represent China, I think it's highly unlikely that she has given up her US citizenship, contrary to what a lot of people are assuming.

Supposedly her "god"father is Ray Sidney who was the fifth employee at Google. It comes as no surprise he can unGoogle himself. He "dated" her mom for several years. He claims that was after Gu Ailing (Eileen Gu in American) was already born. His Facebook page evidently has a picture of him holding her as baby.

Maybe competing for China is just a way for Gu to make more money. (Ironically, a good example of American capitalism.)

She was raised by her Chinese mother and was mostly ignored by her American white father, so she feels more comfortable with the Chinese culture.

She didn't want to be forgotten in 2 weeks like most Winter Olympians will be, and decided to compete for the country that will keep her in the spotlight for a longer period of time.

She is being honest when she says she wants to inspire lots of people to get involved in Winter Sports, and she thinks there is a lot more potential to do that in China.
There's more ways to look at this than just money.
