First off, I am not a Centrowitz fanboy -- I don't particularly like him and don't think he comes off as the greatest guy in interviews or social media. However, the problem with "half-joking" about Centrowitz's gold is that it actually does end up diminishing his performance, and IMO, the sport as a whole -- if we can't celebrate the actual Olympic champs, how is anyone that isn't already a fan of the sport supposed to understand or enjoy it?
No one, other than haters of specific teams, will say that a 13-3 Super Bowl win is less impressive than a 32-29 SB win or a 31-25 SB win, just because the winning team scored less points. If they do, that person is a moron. A blowout win is one thing, the total points scored in a close game is meaningless when comparing specific Super Bowls.
Same with championship races -- they are unique events that can't really be compared to each other, outside of the truest dominant outliers. Different circumstances, fields, tactics, etc., all lead to different results.
For example, nobody is arguing that Centrowitz's gold is better than Rudisha's 1:41 gold. Rudisha's stands alone. However, I don't consider Centrowitz's 2016 gold any less impressive than a close win in 3:35.
Centrowitz won the race that was run that day, against a frankly stellar field of both clean runners and convicted dopers -- same as the Pats beat the Rams 13-3 on one day and the Steelers beat the Packers 31-25. Nobody is calling those teams the '85 Bears or the '75 Dolphins, but they are SB champs. To consider those winners, and Centrowitz in 2016, as frauds because of the point total or time, is disingenuous and unfair.
