For the past three weeks, there has been a lot of angst on this board about the stock market decline. On another thread three stock trading days ago, I wrote this.
The DJIA is down 6.8% [as I type this]. The market fluctuates and corrects every few years. Anyone who panics over a 6.8% decline either shouldn't be in the stock market or they should be using a CFP or similar fiduciary to help them to understand these inevitable corrections. Also, this is a buying opportunity. I've moved $20k from money markets to stocks in the past two weeks and plan to continue to do so for a while.
Today, the DJIA is back to the level it closed on April 2, just minutes before Trump's announcement of widespread tariffs.
Huge, sharp moves of the market are infrequent, but you have to be mentally, financially, and emotionally prepared to accept that to participate in the stock market.
In this case, I used the decline to reposition some safe investments in money market funds into stocks... specifically, I invested $35,000 into NKE stock. I'm sharing this to make a point to readers who aren't investment savvy.
I'm not a fan of permanent tariffs, although they are a useful negotiation tool. I am also not a fan of Nike the company. I think their shoes are overpriced. I think other shoe/apparel companies might offer better return potential. So why buy Nike? Why now?
I do not mix my personal beliefs and my investment activity. Decades of study show this is a bad idea. Nike looks well positioned to move its manufacturing from China to whichever country eventually cuts a better tariff deal with the US. Nike has brand loyalty and proven supershoe performance. Plus, multiple chart patterns indicate that Nike stock will move back to the $70 range within a few weeks or months. That's about a 30% move from my buy in.
My point is don't worry about this decline... or the next decline. Have a long term strategy and be flexible.

Hitler was exterminating Jews. Trump is trying to make America better.
sally read some history
Hitler was also 'trying to make Germany better'
it's our job to figure out that trump's policies and character are terrible and in fact NOT making America better.
You still advocating for open borders? I have NOT ONCE seen you advocating for secure borders. That beautiful couple was killed by an illegal who was drunk and high and people like him will no longer be allowed here. You support that?
"Treasury Secretary Bessent says that a China trade deal may take two to three years."
I'm selling this little pop. It's all on words and not action.
China is not rushing to DC to make a deal. It thinks Trump will blink after being pushed around by American business leaders. And Xi is right to think that.
