Well, I myself would allow the use of the word "elite" for fast ultrarunners, such as Kouros, Jurek, Kilian, Bitter, or on the women's side, Ann Trason, Pam Smith, etc.

But that these are people who actually ran fast on well-known courses, with spectators.

As far as I know, this Rob Young guy has never dared to actually go to any real races. Can he run 150 or 160 miles in 24 hours? How fast can he run Western States? Etc...

This is so crazy that you can hardly believe it. It's like a 3h marathoner were running at 2:10 pace. All alarm clocks would instantly go off after the first mile. But not in the ultra community. They're more interested in whether the guy is nice and "genuine". Results don't matter. Times don't matter. Everything centers around feeling good, navel gazing and vanity.

Kip Litton got away with it for a long time before too many of you non-navel gazers noticed. There have been multiple cheats in the marathon world.

As for the feeling good, navel gazing, and vanity, that's kind of what many letsrun posters such as yourself get out of your charming posts. It's kind of the flavor of the community.

You'd be surprised. Not nearly as many ultra runners care about trans-con runs. The golden distance seems to be 100 miles these days. All the cool kids are doing it.

Most of my ultra friends think I'm out of my mind running Vol State next month and it's only 500k.

Most also thought I was crazy for running Barkley.

The folks who are uber interested in trans-con records are almost their own little niche of the sport.

Mike Rossi's thing is about narcissism. This just looks like shady "charity" work. This guy has been at this game for almost 10 years. As I said earlier...follow the money.

This is Mable. The cheif housekeeper at the Innkeeper inn. I thought I would chime in for yall to tall you what I seen. The crew and RY left the room a filthy mess. There was nipple pasties, Body glide and tons of Strawberry/ Cherry Gu packets. I looked for something to tell me whether this nice fella was truly running all the way from California to Illinois and all I found was a log book filled up with tic tac doe puzzles. So i am not really sure. I will call over to my cousin and half sister that does housekeeping in Effingham to warn them to be on the watch for the crazy runners in the RV.

Wiki states his PR is 139 miles in 24 hours, but I could not find evidence of this in any database. When or where he supposedly ran it is anyone's guess.

That is, again, a respectable tally for 24h, but even elite women are running further during the world championship, for example. Connie Gardner ran 150+ at the age of 50. Rob's total, if it were verified on an official certified course, wouldn't raise many eyebrows.

As others have stated, he's not a *bad* runner, per se. He's better than average, actually, even with that more humble 3:07. Scoff if you will, it puts him ahead of most of you "hobby joggers" in a typical marathon.

But, it's also not phenomenal. Or even great. Above average is just kind of where the line gets drawn. Above average doesn't typically set world records. Unknowns have stepped out before, but I really think he's gotten in over his head.

Most have said he comes off as a really nice guy. I think he is probably very likeable. I also think maybe there is *some* truth to his bizarre stories of abuse. I think all of it adds up to someone who desperately wants to "be somebody", but just might not have the talent to do it.

We shall see.

I lurk the UList sometimes, Laz seems like a great guy and all, but anyone have any insight into his tech abilities. I kind of get the vibe that email is pushing it for this guy. Is there any hope of photos, videos? I take it he doesn't own a smartphone... Can we get some backup out there please!!

Another issue with the TransCon is it is variable depending on where you traverse the continent - you have the U.S.A. TransCon which tends to have a little route variance, but generally follows the route established back in Bunion Derby on 1928. If you come north to run across the continent in Canada, you get an another 1000 miles of fun on your journey.

As LT pointed out, the 100-miler is "the distance" in the U.S.A. Internationally, 100km is the event.

Then there are the duration events: 6hr - 6days covering most of the spectrium.
