They offered it to a few female coaches who turned it down. This guy was in town and interviewed well so they gave him a 9month deal.

OK...name one young coach who has come into the profession and taken a walk-on and turned them into a conference scoring athlete or better. Most young buck coaches ( coaches with less than 5 years experience) walk into programs that already have good athletes, then they get credit for coaching athletes who are well on their way to greatness.
So what happens to the programs once these great athletes leave? The young coaches are clueless how to recruit.
Bottom line, why hire them? young buck coaches will work for cheap. It's a quick fix that always comes back to bite the programs in their butts.

Young buck coaches are often the far better recruiters. Many older coaches are happy to have a solid job, have worked hard to get a decent paycheck and now have wife/husband and kids. They are far less likely to be the "go getter" recruiters that are often necessary.
Very often they make the young buck hire so they have a young, passionate and enthusiastic recruiter to represent them and get the talented athletes to choose their school. In return they let the young buck put that they coached the athlete on their resume to help them get a better job down the road.
It's actually a worthwhile reciprocation/relationship. Older coach keeps job and looks good with talented athletes coming in. Young coach gets to build resume and show they can recruit/coach and gets a better job where they can become older coach. Process repeats.
Can someone tell me what happend at Portland State? They ran a race recently but there is no post about who is actually coaching the d-runners. Coach Ronnye Harrison is the only coach listed but he isn't a distance coach...

You obviously did not read what was written. The athletes you are referring to, were already there when coach Whit got there.
They were the recruiting efforts of the coach who was there before him. plus these athletes were studs in high school.
5 years is what you need as in 5 years you would have recruited athletes, worked with walk- on and graduated some athletes
The throws coach before Whitsett at Ill State was a 'young buck' as well, Jeff Chakoian, so your logic is flawed from both directions. As a young coach, who began working only with walk ons in a D3 setting, it is upsetting to see comments like this. Generalizations do not work, I am sorry. I have seen many young coaches who are good, and many who are bad, that can also be said with old coaches. Each person is an individual and has their own passions, styles and potential. Please refrain from lumping any group together. If you want a great example of a successful young coach, who has done it in 2 very different situations, look at the U of MN men's throws coach. Many conference champs and All-Americans at Hamline, as a d3 coach at a very expensive private school, then followed that up with making the u of MN into the number 2 rated throws program in the NCAA. Yes 2 of those athletes were not his recruits, and one of them was recruited as a discus thrower by the previous coach but now throws 210+ in the hammer, but the rest were recruited by Lynden and several were walk ons. Again I just ask that you refrain from generalizing as some of us young coaches are knowledgeable and care and can both coach and recruit...
very true and well said! Chakoian is now at UCF and has done a tremendous job both recruiting and coaching. in the throws world, we understand how things work, as in who recruits what kids to what schools, and then who is able to coach them up. as throws coaches we all see and understand. so the people who need to know, know. and the people who are outsiders and think think they know what they are talking about, well, we dont care. because at the end of the day, the truth will come out and if you can only recruit and not coach, it will become obvious! but those of us who can do both and do them well, will get recognized! as in Chakoian and cory young, just to name a few.
