Pretty sure she’d rather retire than have to work with California kids again.
What's wrong with California kids?
90% of California kids are buttery. Meaning the shape is there, but they are soft. Take a California kid outside of California and they can't function if the weather isn't between 65 to 75 degrees out.

Love the stats do you have a link?
Yeah....I coached in DI. 90% of the California kids are soft when the conditions aren't to their liking. I also know several coaches who have coached in California DI schools and they all said the bulk of the kids are soft as well.

That true for the most part. I've known a number of California kids who moved out of state for college, and most of them have struggled with temperatures that aren't perfect.
Although in general they handle being too hot much better than being too cold. The cold freaks them out.

FWIW, I’ve been coaching D1 for over 20 years. Even though I’ve coached on the East Coast and in the Rockies, my California athletes have done fairly well, improving each year and hitting goals we have set.

Are coaches being held accountable for the retention numbers of transfer portal kids? Guessing 5 men and 5 women leave per year and admins may have some questions

Lots of things in the world can be measured easily. Some things in the world can be measured with difficulty. Some things can’t be measured accurately at all but that doesn’t mean they aren’t true.
Looks like he’s running his own training facility in JAX. I spent 4 years in Chambana and now live in FL. I’m not sure anyone sane makes this move. At least not for the ambiance and climate.
Sac State hired a 23 year old female with no coaching experience for their distance position. They will continue to struggle in D1.
Mike Smith gave her a rec, that's all you need!
I don’t care if God himself gave someone a reference, with no coaching experience you shouldn’t even be getting an interview much less the job in a paid D1 position leading distance runners. If I were an athlete there and my coach was the same age as me and has no experience, I would be asking why bother. Even though they are terrible expect those athletes to quit or end up on the transfer portal.

90%, huh? Did you do the math yourself? And the exact definition of soft is unable to compete in temps not between 65-75%.
The truth is, of course, that some kids are tough and some aren't. Bashing CA kids seems a little excessive..

I don’t expect Illinois is his dream job but it is not hard to imagine him feeling like he might need to make a move. His pro group is having a bad time right now; McLeod didn’t make the team, KJT s was 8th at WC, KW had a bad year, Scantling who was one of the favorites at WC was just suspended for whereabouts violations and probably out for two years. College might be looking like a comfortable landing spot at this time.
You just sound like someone who is bitter they didn’t get the job. You act like that’s a power 5 school. Sac State is barley D1 especially on the distance side. Why not give some kid a chance in an area they obviously don’t invest in. From the looks of it Sac has been decent in the throws and that’s about it….

Unfortunately it happens all the time. Remember that school that hired a chick from a middle school or something like that to be the distance coach.
Somehow administrators at lower level d1s let the sprint based programs make trash hires on the distance side so they won't have to worry about using up resources
