I'm about to say something in defense of Trump.
There is talk of linking the payment to Stormy by Trump's lawyer as a possible payment through Russian money laundering that would be an illegal campaign donation because the payment was to help his campaign.
I think the payment was to keep her quiet was to avoid embarrassment for Melania's sake.
Not an illegal campaign donation.
Of course Trump denies he is involved in the payment.

It is very likely the payment--however it was made--was done in a way to make it tax deductible. Somewhere in Trump's 10,000 plus page tax return the payment is hidden, and likely split into parts to hide it--paid from multiple business accounts.
Any embarrassment that Trump wanted to avoid would have been for Ivanka's sake first, and Melania as an after thought.

Based on Trump's past behavior I would have to say the most important factor in this payoff was mostly about Trump, how he would viewed and the effect on his campaign.
In the end its always mostly about Trump. There is no reason to think otherwise.
