I applaud everyone here who says that Republicans would never rejoice in violence if they do so because that’s entirely what they see among those around them, what they feel deeply to their own core, and what they intend to stand up for as a foundational ideal. I share their dismay and horror at the assassination of Kirk. I share their contempt for those who celebrate or even make light of Kirk’s killing.
It is my sincere and fervent hope that they will continue to denounce violence loudly, consistently, and with the firmest conviction any time there is an insinuation of additional violence.
There may be other violent actors who deserve to be investigated and prosecuted, and there may be people of poor character who should face some consequences for cheering on violence and fomenting hate.
And the rest of us can agree or disagree, often forcefully and even if we see no value in the political opinions of those who differ from us. And we shall do so peacefully and with genuine understanding that such peaceful debate is at the heart of so much that is great about the country we share.
