I would not be the least bit surprised to find that Trump actually believes that he is a scratch golfer - even as he nudges his golf ball to a more advantageous lie or simply writes down the number of strokes he thinks he should have gotten on a particular hole as opposed to the number of strokes he actually took to sink the ball (if he even bothers to sink the ball).
He probably believes two things:
1) Black people love him
2) He is such a magnificent orator that even the few who did not love him before will adore him after seeing him speak in person.

I'd add that trump has decades of positive feedback on his personality - he has been led to believe that if he leads with what he really thinks in his little head, people will like him. if he says what he thinks everyone believes but is too afraid to say.
And that's pretty much been true - he created an actual cult of personality in the United States of America and make one of the major parties his own. Using the force of his charismatic personality.

I actually do have a pathological liar in my immediate family - my younger brother. Perhaps I do sometimes give Trump too much "credit".
On a side note - it has been interesting to observe my brother over the years. One thing that stands out to everyone else in the family by now is that telling lies is so natural for him that it is his immediate response to anything - even when there does not seem to be any advantage to telling the lie.
Just as you and I (and most people) naturally tell the truth and have to do some mental and emotional gymnastics to lie (which we occasionally do), my brother just as naturally lies about anything and everything and has to do mental and emotional gymnastics to occasionally say something that is honest.
