It's very hard for me to believe that Israel will commit to a full-scale invasion and occupation of Gaza City. I mean come on. The Israelis will be sitting ducks in a hostile urban territory, after already having given up any element of surprise. Israel has given Hamas plenty of time to lay all kinds of traps with mines and roadblocks to funnel the Israelis into crossfires and minefields. And such an invasion would cost Israel all the goodwill they found in Europe and North America while maybe drawing in Iran.
I just don't see a big invasion making any sense militarily or diplomatically.
Unless they literally carpet bomb for 8 weeks, flattening everything first. But then why would they need to invade? And rubble provides excellent cover for snipers.
More likely Israel will create a DMZ 1k inside the border or something like that.
But maybe it's too late - Israeli politicians may need to save face and follow through on its threats.
