1 What did you learn in history classes? In Europe most people see the similarities between Trump's administration, the old communist dictators and the nazis in Germany. How come so many Americans don't see the similarities with neither communism, nazism or fascism?
2 What do you base your decisions upon? I have 9 years of university education, but I understand that if most experts says x and I believe in y, then I am most likely wrong
I will ponder those questions after NATO dissolves and an EU military force takes its place.
31 NATO countries are not fully independent sovereign nations.
I have a very, very hard time chalking up much, if any, of Trumpism to poor education.
Education in America isn't to blame for tens of millions of Americans pretending not to see - or openly being OK with - dishonesty, indecency, election stealing, incompetence, lawlessness, etc., etc., etc.
It reflects some combination of ethical/moral/social faults, but it largely ain't the teachers' fault.
Clearly Rs excuse the amorality of Trump by saying two things:
1/ 'every politician is just as criminal and amoral and did the exact same crimes as trump,' so they give trump a pass
and they say
2/ who cares - he's a jerk but he's our jerk and he gets things done. We're not electing a choir boy here.
If you think every politician is just as bad as trump - and Republicans do think that to the bottom of their addled souls - then it's not a morality question, just a 'who will make the libs lose more.'
.....but it still ain't on the teachers.
And as I think about #2, I'm thinking that tons of Trumpers learned from their teachers that Germany was good about running their trains on time, and ditto their concentration camps, for a time.
My experience with Trumpers is that they are headline readers. They don’t do nuance nor deep dives into anything. Everything must be simplistic and black and white. Even though the world and issues are complicated.
I spoke to someone yesterday about the Garcia case and it was “good. We need gang members out of here”.
Where do you go with that? Are you going to explain due process to a Trumper? Are you going to try to explain that the court was not forbidding deportations in any way? How about our founding principles? None of it would register.
and that is on the teachers/school systems. we decided as a nation that civics education was of tertiary importance so kids don't learn this stuff.
one way out of this mess is to start a long formal civics course in every school to teach kids how to be good citizens of a republic. But trumpers would insist on some absurd rule to blow it all up I suppose.
there is very little understanding of european history among Americans. Few could give you even a thumbnail sketch of what WW2 was all about. Almost no one could draw the parallel you are making.
Interestingly, in America the old folks have, for the first time in maybe forever, moved toward the left. I think a major reason for that is that oldsters do have some memory of the totalitarians of the 30s-80s, and see trump as one of them.
Younger people have no knowledge or memory of that period and just think Trump is an appealing man who will fight for traditional culture in some way. They have no idea that trump is following the same path as authoritarians throughout the 20c.

To some extent this is a reasonable take. Schools in the US are pretty good and we can count on a HS graduate to have a basic ability to read, write and do basic math. This provides a base working class who can contribute to society with minimal additional work training.
The failing comes in teaching critical thinking. Every controversial topic is avoided and no meaningful discussions happen there. Rather than show students competing headlines with obvious bias and explain how they manipulate people, or even the real motivations of Lincoln's abolition, they avoid all interpretation and critical thought because it might offend the loudest parent. This has resulted in a population that cannot discern motivations of current politicians, reasons why defying the Constitution is an existential threat to the country, and cannot distinguish facts from opinions and memes on X.
Those who excel in school and choose higher education are overwhelmingly "liberal". Not because of indoctrination, but because they seek new knowledge and ideas (literally the definition of liberal), learned to think and question. Of course this is the enemy of authoritarians. Hence the current attack on universities and public schools in general.

Experts said the world was flat for centuries.
In America we learn that science is about facts and truth not consensus.
It's hilarious that you jail people for memes and live in racially homogenous countries with little to no immigration and claim that Trump is like Hitler for wanting a balanced budget, border security and fair trade.

I think there is a fundamental lack of teaching basic history and civics. Just a fundamental decision that history and civics are not that important.
Interestingly, Americans' lack of historical knowledge made the nation great by letting it dream new things and be free of Europe. But that was pre-trump, when the parties wouldn't dream of letting a tyrant into the WH.
But now because of trump, the lack of historical knowledge will make us bleed.

In Denmark it was a political party most Americans would call socialists who closed their boarders. We don't jail without proper trial. That is why the legal system should not be filled with people from one political party or another. It should be separated from politicians

sez a member of the group that thinks vaccines don't work, climate change is a hoax, that is, as we speak, purposefully defunding and wrecking science programs at universities, is fanatically religious, etc
speaking of lack of history...this poster is a classic. He thinks European nations have little immigration and are homogenous.

FACT: There are more than two genders.
FACT: There are more than two sexes.
FACT: Climate change is real.
FACT: Recent climate change is caused by human activity.
FACT: The COVID vaccine is safe and effective.
FACT: People that lost their jobs for refusing the COVID vaccine failed the world's easiest IQ test.
Well, half of America learned that science is about facts and truth. The other half voted for Trump.
So Goldman Sachs says we will lose 90 billion in tourism this year and Elon has saved 11 billion. Now can you understand how Trump went bankrupt 6 times. That’s a net loss of 79 billion dollars. Florida is going to be the biggest loser most likely.

Not so sure about bolded claim. Perhaps it extends to the Trumpettes. But not to Americans as a whole.

Because you're an idiot you think the Polio vaccine and the COVID vaccine are equally effective. They are not.
Climate change is real. No one alive has any idea what percentage of it is caused by human activity.
I'm not even a little bit religious.
FinnJ92 is from Norway. Norway is like 95% white. There are less than a million immigrants in Norway and most of them are white from places like Poland.

The Catholic Church forced Galileo to recant his findings, much as the Trump admin is attacking climate science. Science ultimately proved the Earth was not flat. Not by consensus, but by observation, data collection, correlations, creating a hypothesis, testing it thoroughly until it is proven was scientific fact. Not all science has achieved the level of "law", but testing thus far has caused wide acceptance.
Are you arguing that Europe does not have enough immigrants and is too homogenous while also saying that all immigrants need to get out of the US? To your "border security" remark, is that good?
Trump has never moved in the direction of a balanced budget and is not doing that now.
To Trump, "fair trade" means changing the rules of trade on a daily basis. Most would argue that is not fair, nor is it helping US trade or world status.

In related news, Minnesota Republicans just elected a flat earther to a party leadership position
