I see people putting their dreams on hold so they can care for disabled children or adults. I see people volunteering behind the scenes at charities, giving up their hobbies and putting in hours of thankless work, often to see their hearts broken because helping the smiling children in the brochures often turns out to be complicated. Those people are sacrificing. Some guy who plays in a charity golf tournament or does a charity run challenge isn't sacrificing.
Rob does full-time the hobby that we enjoy and pay to do. Based on that article from 2004, he's made doing endurance sports for charity a full-time gig for well over a decade. Good on him. Yes, I guess I am a bit jealous that he gets to travel all over running with folks telling him how great he is while I have to try to fit my runs between working and volunteering and posting on this board.
Defend him if you want. I think he cheated but I also think the accusations on this thread have gone way over the top. Just shut up about it being selfless or "for the kids".
Thanks for your response, I appreciate that and agree with most of it. In a way it underlines my point, because I wouldn't have accused you of making snide comments. I think a lot of what you have said is what I would have said if I didn't know the guy - measured and wanting the truth. Your bio does not surprise me - it probably would if it had come from some of the other people who spill bile on here. Yes, I am the one who did challenges for water charities and if you read one of my earlier blogs I acknowledged that what I was doing was a completely selfish thing. I have never pretended that I was just doing it for charity, but if I was going to run long distances I thought I might as well raise some money. The fact that $60k has gone to water projects is a bonus. And I make no bones about that. Anyone who tells me it was inspirational blah blah blah, I just let them know that it was a 17 day holiday for me, doing the thing I love.
I'm not sure where you got the decade of endurance sports. He gave up a job to do the year of marathons in 2014. And I do believe he has a big heart whatever anyone says. This is not about making money - when I have talked to him he was worried where the next penny was coming from. There will be criticism for that but you can't have it both ways. I hope his book does make him enough to keep doing what he is doing but I'm not sure selling books is quite the bread winner people think it is.
I'm also very glad Laz has made it there now and look forward to seeing his reaction.

I'm just what I think you guys would classify as a hobby jogger (I'm thrilled when my half marathon time is within 10 mins of 2:00, in either direction) and only aware of this whole situation thanks to the Deadspin article, but I'm enjoying the online sleuthing a great deal, so thank you much for that.
My question: it seems like there should have been red flags about this dude going off for years, and yet it took one guy going for a late night jog in a town with a population < 1,000 to blow it wide open. What took so long? Again, I'm about as far from possible as an expert, but even when I run a local 5K fun run (PR 25:16, suck on that, Franklin D Roosevelt) with like 100 participants, I'm super careful to cross over every speed check along the way for fear it will look like I took a shortcut to, I don't know, impress other flabby middle aged non-runners or something. How is this guy winning races of any significance and getting written up in real publications without any of this bubbling up to the surface before?
Anyway, thanks again for all the entertainment. Looking forward to the truth being exposed, whatever that may be.

Laz was at RUTS last night, by the way. He still walks ultras even though he's got a bad leg, smokes, and is in his 60's. Not sure how many miles, but he did log over 100 at ARFTA last September.
Experience told him RY and crew were behaving dangerously and he felt it necessary to intervene.
He has a quick wit and he'll call out bs but he's not a heartless jerk either.

That was a description of the crew setting sail. While Laz and Ray can be a bit grizzled, I suspect this has little to do with their being runners and they would be of this nature regardless.

Sorry, but none of us give a damn about laz himself or his friends. We're very grateful and happy he's done this long trip. But we want evidence of Robert Young's running. That's it. We're sick of these fairy tales about how nice and genuine all these ultra runners presumably are.
Give us video and data. And we'll be able to judge Rob and Laz from what they do.
That said, Laz is off to a good start.
