Don't forget that Lange was putting out great teams for years before there even was a state meet. If state had existed for longer the number would be higher
Hopefully Liam Miller, Miles Cook, Benjamin Bouie, Broen Holman, Max Douglas, Aydon Stefanopolous sign up for Footlocker West. Footlocker is still a national level meet and they have the talent to compete for the top 10 spots. It will be tough because Northwest + Utah had some really fast individuals not make it to nxn
It really is an absolutely incredible record. It might be broken someday with better shoes but I don't think anyone will ever run a better race on that course than Fernandez did. Especially since with NXN the next week there's an incentive not to try for the record (since, as we saw with the Youngs, that can backfire)
Tend to agree to an extent with a poster above, believing that German could have run 14:20-flat or a tick under w/today's super shoes.
Given the course is approx 30% pavement, the rebound effect would be most pronounced on those hard surfaced course segments. Coupled with training effect benefits accrued over time.
German's race in 2007 was particularly amazing in light of the fact he improved by 1:13 from his state meet performance the year prior, where he finished 31 seconds behind . . . trumpets & drum roll . . . Chad Hall, who went on to win the 2006 Foot Locker title.
I vaguely recall German had injury or illness issues which hampered his early years of hs running. Suffice to say, he put in some serious training that following summer -- while waitering at a local Applebee's, as legend has it.

Agreed.
Wondering if the RunningLane meet this Saturday will pull anyone away from FL West. Have read on this forum that some of those schools will be sending their JV squads.

Ayala will be going to runninglane. Hopefully they can give some competition to the Southwest teams there. I wonder if any othe good California teams will be going
How does a California runner qualify for Foot Locker? I know there's a regional meet, and the top ten go to nationals, but how does the regional qualifier work?

For footlocker it's not a special meet just for California, it's like NXR. We get grouped with Utah and other local states and all race west regionals, a 5k, at Mt San Antonio College.
Here's the merge of the top 16 Boys Teams from the Power Merge of the whole meet.
102 - Jesuit -SJ-2 121 - Menlo School -CC-5 139 - Glendora -S-2 175 - Matilda Torres -C-2 185 - Oaks Christian -S-4 190 - Arnold O. Beckman -S-1 199 - Trabuco Hills -S-1 200 - Redondo Union -S-1 202 - Bellarmine CP -CC-1 236 - Great Oak -S-1 238 - Mira Costa -S-1 239 - JSerra Catholic -S-4 266 - Crescenta Vly -S-1 269 - Dos Pueblos -S-2 274 - Campolindo -NC-3 301 - Davis -SJ-1
Jesuit's gap gets a little bigger in the final merge, and Menlo to Glendora stays proportionately the same.
Matilda Torres jumps Oaks Christian, but both are a little further behind Glendora
Great work. I wonder where Great Oak would be in this if Paradise wasn’t DQ’ed. In the overall merge they’d be slightly behind Glendora. But like you mentioned, recalculating this merge could change the standings. Third team would get an at large but not sure about 4th team because Austin Vandegrift beat an autoqualifier at state. Great Oak beat Menlo at Clovis but that was earlier in the season and Menlo’s 4th was missing and their 5th man had an off race.

German was injured for most of his Junior year, rehabbing from torn meniscus surgery suffered during sophomore year playing on the JV basketball team. The injury went undiagnosed until May, he had tried to run on it for the entire season before getting it checked. He only started running again in mid October of that year.
The year before, he had run 15:14 to win the state meet as a sophomore.
After his Junior year 2nd place, he upped his mileage way too much and developed a pretty nasty case of shin splints that kept him out for most of track season. He only got fully healthy again toward the end of junior track season and then was more sensible about building up for his senior year.
He was out for 5 weeks and ran 40 seconds faster than he did a year ago, track season may be very interesting for the only guy in CA that broke 1:50 last year.

Thx for filling in the details.
Not many distance runners come from basketball backgrounds. The guy must have had serious hops.
The legend of German Fernandez continues, now 17 years and counting.
What was the reason for the DQ? False start? I’ve seen several ask and no one has said.
I did hear runners at the meet complaining that a competing coach demanded he was DQd even though the officials gave him a warning, but no one has verified.
Yes, it was a disqualification for a false start. The boys lined back up to restart and the official then came over and told Jack to leave the race.
I have also heard the same rumor you mentioned about a competing coach being the one that told the officials to DQ him. I cannot confirm, but the whole situation has been disheartening for my family. My son has great character and will move forward from this.
That’s terrible. I’m sorry that happened. From the outside it’s not a good look for the officials to make a call-give a warning-and then reverse the decision right on the starting line because a competing school coach gets involved. I have never seen an outright DQ in xc for a false start. Sad that other coaches can’t be a little more human and think about destroying a poor kids last race in HS. Not the kind of coach I would want for my kid. If the talk I heard is correct it’s even more of a bad look. Seems there were some personal factors involved.

It’s ridiculous that someone got DQed for a false start and the race hasn’t even started. The race didn’t even START. So there was no false START. They should have let him try again. If someone did something wrong DURING the race, THEN it would be right to DQ them

Fun fact: Griffin Kushen came from a basketball background before running freshman year. But Kushen also does come from a family of runners- Sander Kushen ran at Dartmouth and held the Tesoro 5k record for a while until Griffin’s junior year.

I can't believe that a video of the false start doesn't exist. That would help all of us decide if the kid is a blatant cheater, or the officials are incompetent. Either possibility seems credible to me, without further evidence.
