It would appear many coaches nowadays would rather stay away from big jobs if it means dealing with certain personalities or admins. I think the value of personal happiness and quality of life is really being shown in the slowness of hiring this season.

There is a lot of truth to this...I can attest as a college coach. Athletic directors used to largely be former coaches who moved into the administrative ranks, hence could relate to all the variables that a coach has to deal with on a day-to-day basis. I think they also understood that coaches are very self motivated and put a lot of pressure on themselves. The new AD typically doesn't have a coaching background, hence cannot relate. They think a big part of their job is to motivate the coaches that they hire, while being completely unattached to what their jobs actually consist of. It can be frustrating working for the new AD.

There are other strong T&F programs, of course, but nowhere else in the continent is there such a public eye on the program as there is at Oregon. A&M, Texas, USC, Florida, et al are top programs but football is king in those places and most everywhere else. Even in Eugene, since the football team got very good (for awhile), the T&F program is still a big deal and in what's left of the newspaper all the dang time.
Certainly, there must be coaches who don't want to be in this pressure cooker. Most places, a head coach could suck and still be in the job a long time. Assistants who aren't the best can last a lot longer when they're not in the eye of the public.
Not to say that being in a place where fans actually come to the meets is bad; it's just not for everyone.

I feel like more coaches are being fired recently then what you saw maybe 10-15yrs ago. Certainly the money coming into college athletics has increased for many college athletics programs, especially the Power 5 schools. With more money tends to come higher expectations and more pressure to win. The rise of the internet has increased the expossure too which is great but this can also bring more pressure. Having coached at a power 5 schools myself, be prepared to give everything you have for the program, if married you need to have a supportive and understanding spouse who knows the time demands of the job. If you have kids, make sure you’re there for them. It takes a special person to be a successful power 5 coach.

I know a few people from the Iowa Central community and they said that he died from a heart attack. They also told me people are having a hard time with his unexpected passing as they spoke with him a week prior and he never showed/ had history of health problems.

I always got the impression that Petros wrote workouts for everyone and the assistants just watched over them when Petros couldn't be there. I don't know if Althea wrote even 1 workout session. Nothing against Althea, it's just that Petros is clearly the best speed/power coach in the country right now. When someone is on fire the way Petros is, you run with it 100%.
He also strikes me as a person that is a little obsessive, very particular about what he wants everyone to be doing with extreme attention to detail. A lot of times people with that personality have a hard time giving away control of athletes, especially with someone like Lynna Irby who they desperately need for points to win a championship - too much to risk.
And if I were Althea, I'd be 100% ok with that, just learn from the best.
