Russia has about a 10-1 advantage on artillery and has a good handle on air operations over the front lines. Russia has had almost a year to prepare front lines. On paper, Ukraine's counteroffensive should be doomed even though Ukraine now has decent stocks of western armored vehicles, tanks and precision guided weapons systems. Yet, Ukraine is making steady progress in the early phases of the counteroffensive.
Ukraine forces liberated Piatykhatky and scored a huge strike on Russian ammo dump near Kherson. Russia is clearly under serious pressure as they are moving forces from Kherson (now protected by a flooded Dnipro) to the hots spots around Zaporizhzhia. While both sides are taking significant losses, Ukraine has been able to capitalize on nighttime attacks thanks to the fact that Ukraine soldiers are equipped with night vision goggles and scopes while the corrupt Russian armed forces cannot afford the equipment.
