Bit of trivia. Nikki Hiltz ran for Aptos High school in Santa Cruz County. Maggie Vessey ran for Soquel High School about 7 miles away, (10-12 years earlier.) Brett Gotcher (5th in the Olympic Trials marathon) also ran for Aptos High School.
During the time that Maggie was running the 200 & 400 (around 1999-2000) there was a runner (1600-3200) named Alejandra Barrientos who competed for San Lorenzo Valley in the same league. She had the best form I've ever seen. She was the California State 1600 champion and the High School runner of the meet at the Penn Relays one year. On the anchor leg of the 4 X400 at the CCS championships I saw her run stride for stride with Maggie. Maggie had beautiful form also.
Shannon Rowbury was running for Sacred Heart in S.F. at that time and barely beat Barrientos at Crystal Springs at the CCS XC championships. Alejandra Barrientos buried Sara Bei (Hall) at that State 1600 final. Unfortunately Barrientos went to UCLA and faded from the running scene. I thought she would have made the Olympic team in the 5K if she had stuck to running.
Vanessa Fraser (Scotts Valley High) who runs in the 5K tomorrow, competed against Nikki Hiltz in XC and track. Nikki beat her at every distance. I think Vanessa was, and still is, a great runner. She was a two time State Champion in XC (division 4) Nikki ran D3.
Santa Cruz County has had a lot of great distance runners to watch.
They all grew up and went to high school within six miles of the world famous Mystery Spot. The Mystery Spot also goes a long way towards explaining the obdurate lesbianism of the town of Santa Cruz, not that there's anything wrong with that.
