Killian Jornet's Everest summit might not have happened

Well said. These facts coupled with the fact original article was taken down convinced me he did it. Everything makes sense. The switchback issue was off-topic but even that was explained. He didn't intentionally do it, the other races were about the fastest to the top.

I think he summit-ed for sure. He had to do it at night to avoid the crowds. It's good to scrutinize things, but their was no basis to question it that hard. Like you said, the photo looks legit, genuine emotion of success. A mountaineer or alpinist like the subject isn't going to be satisfied without climbing the highest mountain. GPS isn't the end all proving or disproving anything. It goes haywire sometimes. Nature of the tech.

Umm, no. You can't look at a grainy headshot night selfie and surmise that it is proof of locale.

Absurd to think otherwise.

GPS is actually the standard.

Strava or it didn't happen. That's been the gold standard for several years now for FKT. Either that or other well documented GPS + witnesses + photos.

How was that ignorant? Did you listen to the interview? The guy is guilty of hyperbole, but he called it bang on. The interview was lame and he came across as a starry eyed fan. It was like listening to a 12 year girl interview Justin Bieber. He should be called out for that awful interview. You are obviously equally biased.

My guess is the Casio (or any other gps watch) would get the summit correct on one of his two summits. Suunto was 0 for 2 if we take on faith that he actually made it. Pretty sketchy device and/or user.

Even if he did, Jornet doesn't have any proof that he did. GPS says he didn't, no summit photos, no witnesses, no base observations of him anywhere near the summit. Its six months after the fact so anything Jornet, Salomomn, and Suunto role out now will seem contrived.

Jornet probably is the best speed mountaineer in the world. However, his claim that he made two nighttime Everest summits in the space of six days strains the imagination.

For a running analogy, Bekele just made a 25k record attempt in India. He ran well, winning the race, but missed the WR by over two minutes. If Bekele announced next Sunday morning that he just ran the same course at night (during a windstorm) and just happened to break the WR by a small margin, would you believe him? (His proof is a photo of him smiling in the dark and Canova's statement that he saw Bekele around the 5k mark.
