This is where the USA's pure merit trials can prove damaging to its medal chances. Other countries might have someone like Martinez locked into the Olympics based on ranking and performances over the past year or two years. Then trials is really about selecting the second and third participants.

Make the top two automatic. There. You still have a merit system. Have the wildcard option for the third, and maybe you'd have Brenda going. It's not like the wildcard isn't about merit. I know it makes worse TV for your dunderheaded American audience, but is your goal theatrics or the best team you can send?

The U.S. will not get a single distance medal in 2016 with this current system. Brenda, Alysia, Duane and Nick are runners are runners who have actually placed 3rd-5th on the world stage. But you're sending your scrub team with 1:44 guys and women who will go out in the prelims.

Please tell us about an American middle or long distance runner who failed to qualify for our team would've would've won a medal at a previous Olympics.

Very true when you say the wildcard would still be about merit. Americans seem to appreciate "acute" merit - a winner-take-all battle, one race to decide the Olympic spots. But, someone who has performed consistently over a period of one or two years and have proven themselves in competition is also a form of deeper merit. And, as you say, both forms of merit could be combined by taking the top 2 and reserving a wild card. And honestly in a lot of events, it would probably still be the top 3 anyway. But, I don't see USA Track changing any time soon.

It seemed to work just fine in 2012 with 2 1500 medals plus Rupp. With you apparent deep knowledge of track, what makes you think that Centro won't medal this time around?

Also, why do you think the team would be better in the 800 by taking 2 guys who couldn't even get out of the first round at the Trials? The first round in Rio is going to be a lot harder to get out of than what the US Trials presented.

We are sending 3 1:59 women in the 800. There were 7 1:59 women in the race. How the race unfolded was dramatic and unfortunate for Montano, BMart and Ludlow but it's not like a 1:55 woman was left home and a 2:02 woman is going. All 3 are going to be cannon fodder for the dudes in Rio anyway.

The only thing Montano did was run just far enough on the outside of lane 1 to give Rogers enough room to think that she could pass on the inside. She didn't have enough room to make a clean pass and gets tripped up running into the back of wilson, then stumbling into Martinez. Rogers is the one who initially bumped Martinez who then tripped into Montano who then fell.

Rogers seemed to have caused this who debacle and Montano is taking all the heat for it.

I would say Montano is darker than Rogers and I was defending Montano so there goes your logic. Montano's fall was a result of Martinez's stumbling, which wasn't because of Montano. Martinez was stumbling before Montano was anywhere close to her.

It appears Brenda started the chain reaction not Montano.

Unfortunately we need another camera angle to see if there was a slight adjustment in their positions that can not be seen in the NBC broadcast.

It's all a mute point who caused it or not it was not intentional and accidents do happen. If you think someone caused this intentionally you live in a delusional world and really do need to get a life.

For starters I love how half the posters just keep quoting the prettier, quieter, less brown runner for their "facts" of what occurred yet are completely ignoring the video evidence or the other runners' perspective of what occurred. Pretty standard.

Also... if I weren't a runner and I read these boards I would assume that's it's impossible for the runner in FRONT to be at fault when clipped from BEHIND. Oh that's right... it is possible to have contact from behind that is in fact the front runners fault.

I've watch the video a lot and do not see any contact with Martinez and Montano until Martinez starts to flail around. At that point she slows down which is when, as many are so nicely putting it, Montano mows into her. It looks to me that she clips Wilson (as Wilson stated in her interview she felt a clip from behind) OR Martinez slightly looses her balance for no reason around the turn. Which causes the reaction. Which can happen. Going that speed around the turn.

Did you a**holes not see how hard Montano went down? She is almost upside down in one frame. So yeah.... a hard fall plus that much adrenaline with 150 to go in 800... of course it took her over a minute to finish. It's not her fault it was nationally televised.

You can deliver a lot of babies but putting your ego aside you realize people like me have lost babies and saw her careless actions as attention getting along with being dangerous to the baby.

As for her pr? Big deal what does she do in international championship. If this was a court case there is plenty of doubt that would cast based on numerous choices she has made.

Plus her lack of understanding with what really took place is upset and people have a right to their opinions wheather you like them or not. Until you have lost a child be careful who you call an idiot.

Was this from a different angle than the one broadcast on NBC? All I see is Monanto's acceleration coincide exactly with Brenda's stutter step and then stumble/contact with Montano.

It's very clear what happened.

Montano lost to Bmart for the WC 800M bronze in 2013.

She never forgot that Brenda out leaned her and won the medal the Montano desperately craved. shealso knows she's getting older and has seen the look at me model from Nick Symmonds/Kara

In this race, she sees her last real shot at an Olympics slipping away. So she uses it as an opportunity to subtley take out her rival.

Every woman is different. I know women who run races longer than 800 meters 8 months pregnant. Millions of women across the world work in fields until the day the baby is born. Studies show that women who are already active and remain active through the pregnancy have easier births.Assuming that Montano didn't discuss her training with her doctor is ridiculous. And good for her to bringing attention to how a woman can handle pregnancy and physical activity. Americans are idiots about pregnancy and women's health. We aren't fragile little beings that need to be bedridden for 9 months.
