Best All-Time HS All-Star XC Team by State

The thing I would add is; that in Florida, we rarely ever raced XC in temps below 80° in any race. More often than not the temps were high 80's with high humidity. Really the same for T&F. So times were a bit slower.

So maybe a temp conversion, a la altitude, is in order when tallying up the final score.

1. Gerry Lindgren (8:40i for 2 mi; 13:44 for 5k)

2. Matt Davis (14:09 3mi; 3x WA Champ; 2x FL Qualifier, 31st, 3rd Place; 9:04 3200 as Jr.)

3. Tanner Anderson (14:31 5k; 2x WA Champ; NXN Champ, 3rd Place; 8:56 3200)

Maybe Dressel should be fourth on here. He has better times and FL places than Hawkins, just no state xc titles but only because he ran behind a dude who dropped a 14:31 5k.

Good list and I agree. Herold over Rombough and Olin Hacker ran clutch races in the post season of today. I still would include Keith Hansen but all I know is he was a sub 9 guy in high school (Losing to Chris Brewster from Canada at the Keebler Meet in track) and went on to place third at NCAA;s in cross and won an NCAA title over 10k for Marquette in track.

I do remember Keith Hansen in college and his nickname was "Hammer" because he loved to take it out hard in every cross race and did that his senior year in the snow covered course at NCAA's at Marquette leading until the final 1000 when Yobes Ondieki and Tim Hacker over took him.

Have no clue of his high school cross accomplishments or if he ever ran Kinney Nationals.

Josh brickel could be replaced by any of the names I just gave. (Logan Poteet, Miles Yapp, Tyler Anyan)

I'm not from Washington but backing in 1973 there were two studs, Gordie (8:53.2) Braun and Reed (8:58.0) Mayer.

David Merrick should be on the IL list, perhaps over Sage. Merrick ran 4:05, 8:43 [8:51 on a flat 12 lap/mile indoor track], 13:38 indoor 3 mile record and dominated cross country in his time. In college, though oft injured, he won 3 Heps XC titles, set a VCP 5 mile record [23:51] on the old ungroomed course and was 5th at the '75 NCAA cross country meet. No one was remotely close to him in HS cross country in the early '70s.

Rickey Pittman should not have been added to the list for Ohio. His Xc results wasn't as good as the track. His best time for 2.5 was 12:11 while other runners were in the 11s and me never won.

Zach Wills should be there as he got 4th in his freshman year and won the next 3 years. Bradjic was the only runner to run faster than wills those last 3 years.

I do know Wills ran in the 14s at least once. To quantify talent, Wills ran 8:18 as a soph.

I give more credit to those that not only ran fast but won multiple years. A lot of runners had one great senior year but hard to put them ahead of runners who dominated multiple years. I don't know much about Hesson as I was "absent" those years. He won 3 times in the small division but his best time was 15:20 the year White went 15:05 and Rexing ran 15:08 in the large division. The unknown is if he could have run much faster against the other guys.

For boys, Solomon Haile and Matthew Centrowitz Jr. are easy 1-2 from last 40 years. After that, well I don't know if Footlocker finish should be the only metric. Maybe one or two from each decade?

60's - They ran 2 or 2.5 miles XC and there were no national championships so it's a little tough to compare. In 1969 Mike Fertig of Whitman dropped a 12:41 for 2.5 miles which was jaw dropping at the time, or so I've read. Previous state champs had been over 13:15. He followed it up with a 9:08 2-mile on the track.

70's - All of MD's top 7 might be from the 70's if left to Malmo. Two XC state champs that I am most impressed with are Gordon Oliver of B-CC 12:21 2.5miXC, Eastern States XC Champ over Centrowitz Sr., and followed it up with Penn Relays mile win in 4:10. Jim Peterson of Wheaton 14:56 3miXC at states in first year MD went from 2.5 miles to 3 miles and nobody has ever run faster at states (granted courses changed a lot) and followed up with 4:10 mile state record in track.

80's - The only one other Maryland top 15 FL finisher besides Haile and Centrowitz is John Scherer 1983 who ran 15:01 on a Hereford course when Kris Herdt (eventual 8:20 3k / 9:04 3200) ran 15:26. Sounds pretty amazing to me.

90's - Pascal Dobert was 2xstate champ and untouchable in MD as senior. Don't know about Cory Smith/Calert Hall but her ran a 9:05 3200m.

00's - It's Haile and Centrowitz Jr, but in the non-Footlocker category, some of the most impressive XC athletes I've seen in the past 15 years are Steven Duplinsky, Graham Bazell, Matt Jablonski, and Andrew Palmer. I could go on and on. I'm impressed by the kids every year which is why I remain a devoted follower and fan.

Almost everything is ccrrect except his NCAA finish. He was 9th. Merrick was definitely a cross country specials in high school. His understudy was none other than Craig Virgin.

Ok so i omitted hanson. He makes that first team I believe but then a lot of others get pushed down. He "only" took 12th at Footlocker but might have been a little better than that in other years.

According to Crawford's site, Mayer ran 12:01 for 2.5mi at state, and Braun ran 12:06. It seems like 12:10-12:15 was a typical winning time on this course so those guys were studs in XC too, in addition to their track times. That 4:40 pace is probably roughly equivalent to the guys running 14:40s for 5k given the extra half mile.

The South Dakota list is way off. There are some glaring absences and some people are on there way more for what they did outside of high school or outside of xc. The order 1-7 can be debated a bit, but I think this is our top 7.

The OP stated high school creds, all but Pollard are listed as college/pro. Coppess was like a 4:21 miler in high school.

From the mid-70s

Randy Jackson - 3rd behind Salazar and Froelick at AAU XC, or whatever it was. 9:00 2 mile (8:56-57 3200)

Ed Delashmutt - triple crown mile champ (IPI, Golden West, and another on the east coast); effectively national track champ. ca. 4:05.

Jon Mathiason - 9:02 2 mile (8:58-59 3200)

David Korir - 1:49 or 1:50 in high school and went onto mid-d stardom at ISU

Add Jim Eicken 8:55 2 mile (8:52 3200 m) 1975

Phil Coppess is the all time blue collar hero, but he did not have an outstanding high school career. He Was state champ in XC in 1971, but Class D (smallest schools). He ran 10:19 for 2 miles, Mark Johnson (4X big schools XC winner) ran low 9:30s a the same championship meet.

Jackson and Mathiason (1st and 2nd in 1975) probably deserve to be on the list. Jackson for sure because he placed high at the national level at AAUs (pre Kinney-Footlocker era).

Uhl did win state XC in 2005 but didn't see any national lists. Gabrielson and Moen were never state champions. Lewis won the big schools division in 2010, but Footlocker or NTN? Regionals or Nationals?

I did not think this thread would occupy so much interest. I would gladly yield to anyone who is interested in compiling the team rosters already submitted for the distaff side of things.
