Pong- end of thread.
Tetris ate so much of my time in college, still a pretty cool game.

OG game that we played in the arcade? Space Invaders. We went nuts for that (and Pac Man).
Then the Atari dominated our weekends with Donkey Kong and Pitfall.
The Commodore 64 smashed our expectations with some of the best games ever, such as Seven Cities of Gold (my personal favorite).
The NES was top notch with legit Tetris, Mike Tyson's Punch Out, and of course Legend of Zelda, the original.
Then I went to college and stopped playing everything but an odd game of Tetris now and then.
Now, it is just my kid's Breath of the Wild on the Switch that has potential to pull me back in...
The original Far Cry. With hilarious mercenary conversations!

Funny. Because I haven't played that game in years, but always had a memory of that cutscene!
10 years later and more and more people are trotting out console franchises in the 5th or 10th editions.
None of them can be the GOAT as they are just remakes and didn't innovate anything. That is, Doom or Quake could argue for it because they pioneered FPS. But Call of Duty 20 or whatever it's at by now is just a franchise.
Video games took a big turn south after online multiplayer killed off demand for good single-player games. The rise of cell phones was another step backwards. The best were all in the 80s, 90s and 00s.
For best hand to hand combat game, I'd nominate Karate Champ for starting the genre, or Street Fighter II for being the most successful arcade title
Haven't had any kind of video game system for donkey's years/decades but I've got to say that Populous was one of my faves!
I don't know if many of the oldies on this thread have gotten to experience them, but super Mario odyssey and especially Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild are in my opinion two of the highest quality games ever made. Especially legend of Zelda, most open world games aren't very good, but everything on the map feels intentional. The story is great, visuals are beautiful, bright colors, and the soundtrack is amazing. It has action, exploration, puzzles, everything. I think it's probably the most complete game in my opinion

It’s super Mario World for SNES
Space invaders. Easy to play and iconic sound effects.
