Outdoor starts this week for Augsburg, Bethel, and Carleton on both coasts. Not sure if any individuals from other schools are racing or not. Looks like Scholastica and Olaf distance runners are headed to WashU, while many others are hoping the Johnnies meet happens next weekend.
With Outdoor in mind, hear are some burning questions -
Will Grant crack into the 45's? Will Turlington dip under 14?
Can any of the 5 Indoor 800 qualifiers or Lelinga/Montreiul get the MIAC 800m record of 1:49.45?
Can Cole break the MIAC 1500m record of 3:44.74 after only ranking 7th in the MIAC last year - perhaps the best glowup in the country!
Will St. Olaf or St. John's take the 4 x 800 record? Can any challenge the national record? How close can Cooper and Trent get to the 43 year old MIAC shot put record?
Not so nice questions -
Will a single decathlete top 6500 points? Will a single steepler run sub 9:00? Will anyone not named Turlington run sub 31:00 in the 10K? Will we see a sub 14 hurdler? Will a high jumper clear 2.00m or a long jumper top 7.00m?

Grant ran 46.20 at the MIAC meet,, but had Parent to push him. It will be harder this year. Bethel will need to race La Crosse more often for him to have competition. Or maybe the Gophers.
I think Turlington runs 14:08 and 29:50. Cole will run 3:46 this year. Maybe he breaks the record next year. Ihrke will run sub 1:50 and a random Ole, but none will break the record this year.
I hope we see both Trent and Cooper near 20m Outdoors. How good was that Hamline thrower?

Yes I think so. Yes I think so.
No, doubtful.
No way.
St Olaf has a chance, but I don't think it happens. No.
I have no clue on SP.
Same with multi. Fitzgerald should easily. I say yes. and yes to the hurdle & jumps.

Yes, but Grant will need the Hevel guys to run with.
Olaf isn't letting Chunko take expensive trips or split squad outdoors, so I don't think Turlington will find the competition for a sub 14.
I think the 800 groups will be closer than you think. I could see several in the Ole/Ihkre group run 1:49 high.
Cole won't break the record, but he will run fast. I wonder if Iggy will return to his 3:48 form.
Soren will score 6600 Outdoor. I think Deaver, Iggy, and Goss all run sub 9:00. Watch for Torte to run sub 9:10. Gael has already run sub 31:00. Goss has a good shot and probably a couple Gusties. Pryce should have a shot at sub 14. I think we see two 2.00m jumpers. We have multiple jumpers that have already been over 7.00m. Schreiner, Reis (if healthy), Albertson, and Bovitz. I think we will see 7 men over 7.00.
I guess I don't understand why Olaf needs to go anywhere special. They have four 800 runners to race each other, Turlington has proven he can run just good enough to make Nationals, and they don't have anyone else worth talking about. Chunko has an army of jv runners that think they need to spend money on silly meets in far locales when nobody else complains about running a largely local schedule. I could see taking a strong hurdler or jumper somewhere warm, but the Oles should be able to get by working with other MIAC schools, including the one across the river, and the Gophers and Tommies.
Is WashU special? What about Drake? It’s a long drive and a few hotel rooms for their team. Is St. Olaf really that bad off that they cannot afford that? Or are they reigning in free spending by a coach they clearly don’t like or trust to stay on budget. Maybe the AD just wants to see other sports have success and wants to not spend all their money on track. If Chunki did a better job of connecting with alumni, he would likely be able to fundraise better.
Also, if should come as no surprise that the WashU entries are ambitious with a capital A.
I love me some overseeding Ole hate, but I don't think Turlington's time is that much of a reach if he's healthy. Same goes for Logan Murphy. How about Loras seeded at close to a top 25 time in D3 history? If Hammerand is in 29:15 shape in March, May will be very exciting. Now if Alex Bjork runs under 15:00 I'll run every race this season in a Hawaiian shirt.
Why aren't the Ole 800 runners racing in this strong field? I'll never understand why Chunko prioritizes his longer runners when the strength is clearly the 800 group.

You don’t think a group that ran 7:34 last year with a 1:56 lead off won’t run sub 7:30? They could use six or seven different guys to run sub 7:30. That is, if they are allowed to race at Drake. If Chunko wants to make his bosses happy, he will be prioritizing individual events at MIAC champs and try for a team good enough to finish second or third in the relay. We all know they cannot win at home, but he has already lost the head coach position due to a desire to want to more competitive. I can’t imagine what placing third or fourth at home will mean for him. Maybe the strength coach will personally oversee a training program for some physical fitness. He needs it just as much as the supervision of how he runs his program.
Can’t imagine what would be worse in the eyes of the Ole admin. Not winning conference at home or not making nationals across town. As impressive and ambitious as the strength coach is and his desire to keep Chunko in line I’m going to guess he’ll put a lot of pressure on him to succeed. Although he has already been demoted from Head Track Coach. Short of losing his job, not much else can be done.
Congrats to Grant Nelson on qualifying for Nationals today. 46.80 & 20.91. Looks like McConnel does have Outdoor eligibility, opening with a smooth 10.61/22.17 double.
The Outdoor season has started with a few memorable performances, mostly from Bethel. The highlights - Cameron McConnell having outdoor eligibility immediately moves Bethel ahead in the 4 x 100 rankings. Being near PR shape is tremendous for the potential for his bonus season. And Grant Nelson did Grant Nelson things with a 20.91/46.80 opener. Bethel's Michael Schulz notched a nice PR in the 800m with a 1:58.50. While not in contention to win the MIAC, it's great to see this kind of improvement in the longer events and he beat MIAC mile scorer Lange of Carleton. Swanson also notched a nice sub 15 110H opener. Carleton seems to have run in several different locales, but nothing tops the weekend triple that Asher Nathan had, running 100m/200m PR's, including a spicy 22.11 at Redlands and running a 400 at Riverside.
The field events were largely dominated by Bethel throws. Timmy Ball hit 48.45 in the discus and Hokanson had a 54.67 opener in the hammer. Johnny javelin specialist threw over 50m in every throw with the D1's in Florida.
We'll follow with women's results later today or tomorrow.
