Breaking down the top 30 by country:
Eritrea - 1 (Samuel)
Kenya - 17 (Kipchoge, Musau, Kipngetich, Kiprotich, Lokira, Kiplagat, Cheruiyot, Bera, Kurui, Kogei, Chirchir, Kimutai, Kimutai, Kiplimo, Kipruto, Kipruto, Cheruiyot)
Morroco - 2 (Messaoudi, Er Raouy)
Ireland - 1 (Laadjel)
England - 1 (Couttie)
Israel - 1 (Guadia)
Timothy Chesondin and Meshack Kuyo are also listed as American on world athletics but bios say from Eldoret and Nairobi, so that would be 7 Americans in the top 30 instead of 5 if true. Last year for comparison (18 Americans in top 30):
Eritrea - 1 (Samuel)
Kenya - 5 (Musau, Kipngetich, Kiplagat, Yego, Kiprop)
Spain - 1 (Mechaal)
England - 1 (Couttie, Mullarkey)
South Africa - 1 (Masondo)
Morroco - 1 (Redouane)
Ireland - 1 (Casey)
WA lists Yaseen Abdalla as Sudan but he's American so I didn't include him here. The big changes from last year were many more kenyans not running poorly at nationals and lots of new (many overage) freshman. Also, for every Ok state/Iowa state/New Mexico there's also a
or a
and community colleges all over with lots of kenyans who aren't here to run and aren't all that fast and probably aren't really taking roster spots from Americans. IMO the best solution is either actually enforcing the amateurism rules (which they don't now and with the way other sports are trending may not last long) or an age limit (sorry BYU) of 24. Ofc there's concerns about faked birth records, but that will push away the people who have been competing at a pro level before coming to the NCAA.
tl:dr enforce amateurism and 24 yr old age limit for objectivity but other sports would likely be unhappy with it
