Stupid statement. They would he slower if they were fat. Like saying many people who train are still slow. So why train?
We merged two threads into 1. The other thread was called "Way skinny distance runners".
One thread was in the college forum. One was in HS. We are going to label this HS as there are way more HS runners than college.

Which athlete?
The one in the instagram link on page 9 of this thread.

We are working around the rules about naming non-adult athletes, because that will often result in a post being deleted. So instead we use links or initials.
This is perhaps the most uninformed comment I've ever seen posted on LR. And that is really saying a lot.
A true statement is the most uninformed ever? Are you literally insane? You may want to check with NIH and CDC.
2000 deaths per year anorexia
1.5 million due to being overweight and the resultant health problems associated with it.
this is a running forum. an elite runner is probably 100x more likely to suffer from anorexia than obesity. deaths from obesity are pretty much a non-issue for serious runners. serious complications from anorexia are a much more common problem in the running world.
This poor young girl. Her dad just wants to fight. If I had this many people raising the alarm bells toward me I would do anything and everything to help my daughter. I’m very worried for this girl.
it's uninformed because most runners are probably not dying of obesity. anorexia is (likely) a much more prominent and serious issue in young distance runners.
You fatties think every skinny girl is too thin. Name a few runners who died of anorexia. I can name thousands who aren't elite because they are overweight.

I agree there are health problems on both ends of the BMI distribution, and that high BMI results in more deaths.
But this does not mean we should simply ignore the low end.

I did in post #84. A great person, and a great runner. Gone too soon. She battled with it for 20 years. It robbed so many opportunities and experiences from her, and ultimately her life. She fought hard but it’s still a beast. Don’t underestimate how deep this abyss can go.
Tell that to the parents of Alex DeVinny. She was a state champion in Wisco and died in her 20s from an untreated eating disorder

You need to get out of the 70s mentality of lighter=faster. Lowen is on track to be the next Mary Cain or Allie ostrander. Even if she doesn’t get stress fractures, her heart can’t keep going, or her body.My daughter had a hr of 38 during her anorexia due to extreme malnutrition. And was very close to dying. When she gained 50lbs and started running again she pr’d her mile by 40s and her 3 mile by around 2 mins. When I look at lowen she reminds me of my daughter during her peak of her eating disorder. It frightens me
Lighter equals faster. That is simple science. You guys are calling out the fastest women for being thin.

The athletes that we are concerned about here are, generally, beyond thin. That said, being thin isn't always the only sign of REDS or disordered eating.
There's power in having muscle. Fast times comes with the power. You have to fuel well to grow and maintain muscle.
The more I see this thread, the more concerned I become. These responses about obesity and a terrible lighter=faster mentality has got to be 100% her father. I fear for this girl and I hope SOMEONE in her life can step in before it’s too late. This guy needs to take a look in the mirror and realize that this is dangerous and not something people have ill intentions with. Nobody is hating on this girl for fun, it is out of concern. There are plenty of other fast high schoolers to talk about but there is no threads saying they need help. It is completely possible to be healthy and fast and I deeply hope this family can garner the idea that MAYBE just MAYBE there could be a better way to go about high school running.

The issue is not death, it's simply staying healthy. Many top runners forced into a 1-2 yr break, or even longer, due eating disorders.
Sadly many don't recover well enough to run fast again.
Dealing with the issue early is a way to preserve a healthy college and pro career.
I think this fatty 2x4 guy is just trolling. Her dad does seem to post some very concerning stuff on social media though
This is honestly scary though. I hope she recovers or at least gets somewhat healthier and has a successful life and career beyond high school. However, running in the state she is in is extremely dangerous in multiple ways. First of all at that type of BMI/malnutrition you are genuinely in danger of having a heart arrhythmia which can lead to sudden death, along with several other complications. Her life is likely in actual danger and she is likely severely medically compromised. These complications are not always easily detected but can lead to incredible danger. I hope she is okay. Down the road stress fractures and osteopenia/osteoperosis start to come which can be career ending. Other health effects come as well such as infertility and digestive issues. I am not saying this to bring her down or hate on her at all. I was a somewhat successful runner (not nearly as talented as AL :) ) who lost my career and almost my life because of anorexia. I was at a similar place to AL this spring and was turned away from many ed programs and was only able to be admitted to a specialized hospital due to risks from being in that kind of place healthwise, to put her state in perspective. She likely is in a very very critical place.
I am also concerned about the potential of her winning a national title. Not because I don’t want that for her, I do, just when she is healthy. She is clearly very hardworking and talented and deserves a title when she’s healthy. I am scared that she may win in this state and further drive the message into young girls that it is okay to be extremely unhealthy and that it is a good option as a path to success. Middle schoolers and other high schoolers watch these races and are inspired by and look up to the winners. I remember seeing Tuohy win and wanting to be like her and before my Ed really set in look like her. Young girls are going to want to be and look like AL if she wins, which could be terrifying. Not because she is not an excellent role model in many ways, but because she is in a place that is extremely dangerous health wise and that should not be normalized or encouraged.
70% of people are overweight. 95% of people would be faster if they lost weight. 1% of people should gain weight.
This child needs to put on weight. Whatever the stats are, she needs help!
