I suggested this one as well. I wonder how many people to this day have run faster than this at 7,000 ft. I know people have run faster in Nairobi, but Nairobi is only 5000 ft. But apparently it isn't the biggest margin-- Elliot's margin in the 1960 Olympics was slightly larger. All right? What did she say
Keino won by 3.3 seconds over Ryun who ran 3:38.2, while Herb won by 2.8 seconds over Jazy, running 3:35.6 to 3:38.4
Let's all take a minute to step back and consider the total content of this thread. Our sport is simply amazing. With a few goofy exceptions, we've created eleven pages of incredible and inspirational performances. How can anyone who gets it read through this thread and not be wowed by the history and accomplishments of track?
Great discussion! This is why people, in spite of its faults, keep coming to LR.
There is no single greatest anything in sport. There's lots of great moments in time.
I never understood why people have to think in such narrow terms, especially to immeasurable and subjective moments of which you only ever witness a few.
Any performance you believe is great, is always "one of the great performances" ...of our era, or of all time....never the greatest. Not possible.
Kip Keino literally sh!tting himself, showing up to the track just a few minutes before the 1500m final, and then running 3:34 to beat the WR holder, Ryun, by nearly 3 seconds at 6000ft of altitude.
Late to the thread. Has anyone brought up Almaz Ayana at Rio 2016? Junxia’s 29:31 was long thought to be unbreakable, and had stood for 23 years. Then Ayana shatters it in the Olympic final. It was an absolutely stunning race at the time.
