Agree, I was there and the crowd exceeded what I'd expected. A stadium the size of Franklin Field is going to be a challenge to GS, it holds 45k or so (which they had when Bolt ran there)... you can put 20k in there (I'd guesstimate they had that many), and it still looks somewhat thin. Ran into more than a few people from well out of the Philly area who traveled in for the meet, which is encouraging for the series. As a long-time athlete and fan, I thought it was a great meet, though it appears they need to work on the TV production.
Being at Franklin Field was fun today. Good size crowd (much bigger than I thought there would be. They were loud and really into it from the 1st pro race. I watched the first two stops of the meet on TV and agree ie was hard to watch, but being in Franklin Field it is a very different experience and in a good way. Too bad the stands are 5' above the track, it limited the exchange between the athletes (who stopped for many fans to take pics and sign autographs) and the ushers had to move the people away from the rail so fans could see the next event. If GST comes back to Philadelphia next year I would go again.
Hopefully they keep the stop in Philadelphia next year. Good attendance and shows how you can get good turnout when you host a meet in a major urban area with a big sporting culture. Wish they’d host USAs at Franklin Field one year. Who cares if it’s a non-standard track. It’s just about racing in a championship meet.
If you think Sydney just ran the short race for fun or to challenge herself and pass up an easy 100k in her specialty you're a Moran. GST obviously paying her big bucks on the side to do this and create intrigue, which is fine. Hell get her in the 800 next time.
I'd bet 100k she's making at the very least $100k per event as salary on top of earnings. She's The biggest name in the sport worldwide.(Excluding people in their home countries like tebogo, alfred, sifan, Jakob, Keely, Michelle jenneke lmao) MAYBE you can argue Noah is similarly or more famous but she was the very first slammer and literally other than mondo or maybe Shelly ann the most accomplished tf athlete currently competing.
The biggest name in the sport WORLDWIDE? Mondo, Noah, Shacarri and Femke are way bigger. Sydney is only big in America
is the problem with the television production that they're using AI directed cameras/drones to save $?
huh?
the video angles don't look like they could possibly be shot by someone with any knowledge of track television production. just looks like everything is shot by drones that are fed some simple directions through AI. the camera work is atrocious.

Femke literally can't be bigger than Sydney. All her fans have had to see her get repeatedly crushed by syd. Not that she's not successful and famous in her own right but that's makes no sense at all. If you had said Shelly ann I could maybe see it but bad hill to die on with this take.
Hot take I do think Shacarri is more popular in the US but it's still very close and when you go global she's nowhere near Syd
Just negative split 1:43. Crazy strength. He'll do some crazy things later this summer
Thought Hoey would give him a better race and that Hobbs would beat all the milers in this race
I'm still very optimistic on Hoey. Might be my new fav short distance guy. He was competitive but Arop might be more race sharp right now having already beaten wanyoni two months ago. Also having the pedigree of being a 1:41 silver medalist helps. Hoey is a world champ himself now so I'm sure he's going to prove himself more and more this year. We will find out today if there's a big 4 in the 1500m.

not to mention the lack of splits being given.
for everybody voting down, what's your take, or are you good with the camera work?
what we are getting is unlike anything I've ever seen, and definitely not in a good way from my perspective.
The 800/1500 group unfortunately doesn’t work when it comes to the 800m races. 800 guys are just too fast and capable of kicking off any pace. 1500 guys despite going out slower and doing no leading go backwards vs the fit 800 guys in every homestretch. The tweak for next year is making it a 1500/3000 group. The 800 guys it’s a little unclear what to do if they have to double. Maybe you do 800 and 3000 on day 1 and a meeting of both on day 2. 16 for an unpaced 1500 might be much so you could have the last place challengers eliminated or something. That’s be completely fine to get it to 14.
No it doesn't. And of course the 1500m somewhat works because any 1.44 guy can run through 1200m in 2.55 with those big 3 and at least give the optic that the race is competitive top to bottom. Again I guess it was a natural grouping based on the format of the league, but it doesn't really fit with the realities of the modern 800m (very specialized) or 1500m (more 15/3/5k) runner now.
Maybe they should have done a 600/800 group and a 1500/3000 group. I don't know why there would be an issue doing a 600 as a non-Olympic event, ultimately the 3000 isn't either (yeah it has much more history and prestige but it's still not an Olympic event). I think you would be much more attractive to the world better 800 guys, I am sure they would rather run a 600m than the torture of the 1500m and obviously a 1500/3000 group suits all the 1500 guys much better including your 3 biggest names who are all stellar 3000m guys too. You know with the WR in the 600m being 1.12.81 and set almost 40 years ago, they actually could have a chance of getting that (especially as I saw Hoey run 1.13.5 for 600m as part of a workout) and Arop is logically even better than that.
Happy for the league that it got a good crowd yesterday. I said a few weeks ago that it was going to be crucial to present well (TV wise) and they did thanks to the crowd size, a good venue and smart production angles avoiding empty seats (even if at times it was dizzying to watch as they flipped between shots). What's ironic about this is that GST wanted to actually hold this east coast meet in NYC but it fell through and Philly/Franklin was a late solution. Could end up being their best meet of the season.

but i love track, so it's still worth watching.
I think I said it at the start of the meet, I think there was a clear production directive to keep shots of empty seats to a minimum and I think it was the right thing to do. Even the pre-meet "analysis" with Anderson, Merber, Richards-Ross they did with them posted up on the back straight in what looked like a completely random spot so they could show a back-drop of the home straight which had obviously had the most people in it. So those classic home straight hard-cam shots where kind of kept to a minimum. They will do the same in LA because Drake stadium literally only has one stand and it's on the home straight. The rest of the stadium is surrounded by hedges and the warmup field down the back straight.
But yes, it seems like they came up with this idea at a production meeting on Thursday and whoever is filming and producing it has little experience getting these angles right because man, it was tough to follow at times - I don't know who could counter that. The other thing that is a bummer is the confusing on screen stuff/lack of splits. I get the whole MO is to be counter status-quo, "not worrying about times" etc, but splits and time does matter - it just does. This does need fixing if we get to year 2.
She's just not fast enough, looked like she was running the 400m hurdles.
She has more raw speed than any of them except possibly Nugent, but is not as good technically so she loses speed. Hoping for favorable conditions today to see her and Nugent run fast in the flat 100.
Andrews and Cranny go home $30,000 and $20,000 richer.
No. They got 15 and 10k. Cranny will peak soon and whip everyone’s butt. If Andrews wouldn’t keep surging and jockeying up to the front every 200m she would be running a better race. Stupid move. Not a fan never was.

assuming this is talking about sydney, but i missed the first part of the conversation. I'm not sure if she could be world class in the 100 hurdles if she worked them as a priority, but when you watch her doing it, it's clear that it's not prioritized, and why would it be.
The big thing with the hurdles is that when you clear each hurdle, you need to maintain your forward momentum and smoothly and powerfully as possible. Syd isn't able to do this as well as the dedicated high hurdlers.
You can see when she comes down to the ground, she leans back a bit as she continues to the next hurdle. the better high hurdlers are able to keep better forward lean and drive, from one hurdle to the next.
It's very evident in the side angle replay, especially on a couple of the hurdles.

Lol Femke is absolutely not a bigger global name than Syd.
She was right fully dqed as the rule states: 163.5 In races run entirely in lanes, each competitor must keep in the allotted lane from start to finish. So finishing on the straightaway and not impeding have nothing to do with a race run entirely in lanes. The announcers did not know the rules. Did they ever show that she was dqed in the telecast? I did not see or hear anything about it for the rest of the show.

You need to read the full rule:
"Unless a material advantage has been gained or the athlete is in violation of Rule 163.4 [deals with impeding - my edit], a competitor shall not be disqualified if he or she:
(b) Steps, runs or makes contact out of the lane on the straightaway"
