Also Jesuit and Crater were both Top 4 at NXN so Rocky didn't qualify because they weren't going to beat either of those teams in any scenario. The kid you mentioned ran a little faster than he had at Bob Firman that year so that wasn't the reason they finished 3rd. Having a 6th man that was closer would not have been enough to beat two teams as high quality as Jesuit and Crater were that fall. It is a luxury to have 6-7 kids running at a very high level, but that 2022 NW was simply a dominant showing by Crater and Jesuit. This past fall the NW didn't have the same firepower, BUT there were more teams in the 10th-25th type national level.

That runner had historically struggled on that course up until NXR this year. Had he run closer to his teammates that he raced with all season, they would have had an actual argument to get selected as an at large.

Oakdale (CA) was in a similar situation last year. They were 5-deep. At CIF, they were solid through 4, but their 5th man was very far behind their #4 unlike at Clovis. If that gap was small at CIF, Oakdale would have taken 3rd in the merge, ahead of Great Oak.

American Fork went 16:43 at new balance nationals for a 4xmile. That is averaging 4:10 per mile. Newbury Park has the current record at 16:29.
Southlake Carroll was 2nd at 17:08
Plainfield South was 3rd at 17:21
For context, American Fork ran 17:13 at Arcadia last year.

Also had a junior run 9:21 for 2 miles.
Their #1 (twin brother of 9:21 guy) ran 9:13 for 3200m at 4500' earlier this year.00 -

Many know that Valor Christian received a new head coach in 2022, but I heard he’s gone now. Unless they get a really good new head coach, their chances of going to NXN aren’t that high.
They were junior-heavy last year but they are losing their #1 (Eike).
I think Mountain View (UT) will be top 4 in the SW. They return almost everyone including a really strong #1&2 (Kyle Steadman - top returner at NXR, and Sohler - 4:14 in the 1600).
