I'm not twisting anything. This is what you wrote: "Slavery can be bad, but slaves could have been able to use the skills learned working on plantations for employment in post-abolition."
You wrote what you wrote, and, like a good rightist, you refuse to even walk back the worst part of it. Just say it: "I know that slavery is bad." By doing so, you're not "giving in to my demands"; you're taking back the part of your soul you amputated when you indicated that slavery isn't always entirely bad. This is about you and your own broken moral compass, not me.
It's sort of funny: you're just walking around in the world, perfectly content with the idea that owning other humans "can be bad." Like, that's a position you're okay with--even more, that you're willing to stake yourself to, despite being given the opportunity to revise. That's you: the guy who, even anonymously, can't write, "Slavery is always bad." Yikes.
I think what he was trying to say was that slavery being wrong and slaves using certain skills to their benefit are not mutually exclusive.
It’s no accident that Florida’s new Black history standards claim Black people benefited from slavery DeSantis appointed Kim Daniels to the task force. In 08, Daniels said: “I thank god for slavery.. if it wasn’t for slavery, I might be somewhere in Africa, worshipping a tree.”

Do you deny that an African-American in 2008 is better off than a black person in the Congo in 2008?
I have talked about that before, yes actually slavery was horrendous it was terrible,.....ok? BUT,,,,,where would all these black athletes and entertainers be doing in Africa? I have black friends none of them want to go to Africa.
The fact blacks capturing blacks to sell to slave traders doesn't get the play it should.
It’s not the same comparison at all. What would be fair is “because of facing discrimination, Jews always valued education since it couldn’t be taken away”
Deathsantis supporters: Yes, let's not only ignore history, let's change so white people look better.
dmb: Actually, let's just teach the R's and not teach history at all
smart take
I’m perfectly happy being whatever boogeyman you need me to be in your head, but I will not let you attribute things to me that I never said.
I think our education system has become an unfortunate instrument in culture wars and there are two poles.
One seems to espouse American exceptionalism and ignores the terrible things that we did in order to become the most successful empire the world has ever known, both in terms of power and force projection. I’ll call that the ‘purple mountain majesty’ crowd.
The other pole seeks to cloak itself in victimhood and use the educational system in this country as a tool of social engineering and equity, regardless of what data says or the logic that underpins their thinking. At their core, they are dangerous ideologues and many want to pathologize whiteness. If you use their own tools against them, you can clearly see a hatred for what they describe as ‘white values:’ self sufficiency, individualism, and personal responsibility. To some people, this is especially threatening because free thinkers can be difficult to govern and manage. So Orwellian tools and structures must be created to manage free thought and expression.
Another part of this unwitting collaboration is the marginalized, historically underrepresented, and the permanent victim class. These people perceive themselves as members of this class, or willingly identify with it in order to gain social currency. It does not matter if data would suggest that people are better off in just about every metric than they were 50 yrs ago, it matters what their gut tells them. This undermines the validity of their message and leads to corrupt organizations like BLM, which causes working class people from both sides of the aisle to miss aspects of their experience that should be considered thoughtfully, and even inform public policy.
So now, we see that people who have no particular allegiance to deductive logic, critical reasoning, and rational decision making are controlling the public debate about education. This is our very own War of the Roses, but it is fought mostly bloodlessly on Twitter and TikTok. Listen up: YOU BOTH SUCK, and you can only make your case by using whiteness as a cudgel or trying to minimize the legacy of Sal very in the country.
That being said, there is no causal linkage between any particular human in the USA in 2023 and slavery. None whatsoever. What exists are likelihoods and tendencies. The fact that most people in this country and ALL of the Purple Mountain Majesty/Marginalized Victim people don’t distinguish between what is likely and possible, or a cause and a co-incident phenomena is disturbing.
If you know how to Read, do aRithmetic, and to wRite well, you will have a strong enough education that you can evaluate both ‘sides’ of this dumb ‘debate’ and come to your own conclusions.
This is really inappropriate and what's more they are leaving out the full context of the slave era LGBTQIA+ community and how that ties in to modern day systemic oppression. Yeah.

Bro. They don't care about their past treatment, current circumstances, or plight. They just want to continue to get their vote. The MF End.

Nothing can make rounds in a capitalist society without money being involved. Scholars in Maryland provided some vague cultural background. Legislators in California established a dubious legal framework. Education and culture wars are just camouflage; behind the scenes, some people want to have a huge pay day through gimmicks. Florida is resisting but they are again the trend and may not hold for long.
Well, it doesn't seem like they were covering Asian slave trading or white inentured servitude at Columbia, at the University of Minnesota or at UNLV (I stopped looking after that).
Microsoft Word - CIS-Afro-1011-Syllabus.docx (umn.edu)
Microsoft Word - Intro-AfAm 2005-syllabus 4a2 Revised Sept 19 2005.doc (columbia.edu)
If we included every topic covered in a semester in our syllabus, it would be 216 pages long. 😀
Trust me on this. Comparing the American colonial slavery system to slavery in other cultures is important. Understanding the differences between serfdom, indentured servitude, the American slave system, etc. is important.
Im sorry. You’re making a big deal out of nothing. There is nothing nefarious about learning about this very dark stain in colonial American and US history.
You sound like one of those crazy parents who go to school board meetings and want certain books banned because you don’t want your son to learn about the gays. Be better.

I think you misunderstood the reasoning behind Smoove's outrage. He and others believe that teaching about slavery in other cultures in the context of teaching US slavery is racist towards black people, since it apparently sends the message that "see, the US wasn't so bad, everybody had slaves!"
It is highly probable that every single one of us has a slave somewhere in their family tree. It could be here in the American south, in Roman times, or even earlier.
There is also defacto slavery that went by less serious sounding names, like feudalism, that ups those odds even more.
I've heard people have the nerve to say some slavery is worse than others which is bull. You are either free or you are not.
All slavery was bad, all of it, but for the US it is also all in the past.
I don't let the fact I had ancestors as slaves hold me back, no one should.
I said nothing about Trump, let alone about some fake 'racial supremacist' beliefs.
And don't you think that East Africans are genetically superior runners?
You said your "lived in experience Trump's mine". So there it is.
You don't understand racial supremacy. It isn't saying some people have a genetic advantage in sport based on their race but that some people are inherently better people than others, who don't deserve the same rights. The Nazis believed that about the Jews and white Americans have often believed that about blacks, and for centuries enslaved them.

In the US, your ancestors were more likely slave-owners - if you aren't black. Discrimination and racial prejudice in the US didn't end with slavery. It's as American as apple-pie - as these threads show.

My ancestors came from Sicily in the early 1900s and never left NY. They were farmers of other people's land since Feudalism was still alive and well in Sicily even in the 20th century. I'm very confident knowing the history of that Island that somewhere in my past I have a slave or two in my family tree.
