Stories like Tuohy and Wilson happen every single year. A lot of athletes peak around the Texas Relays in March or April. I always laugh when people crown an athlete as champion, or contender, in April. And then make fun of SML for only running a 49 this week. She is in the perfect place right now. This happened to Grant Holloway and Trayvon Bromell a couple years. Utter dominance going into the Olympics, big disappointment at the olympics. And countless others in college and pros.
Sorry no shade shade to Michigan but gutted for Wilson. Damn
Hats off to RG3. While the other commentators were talking about Wilson losing, he realized this was an amazing moment for another athlete (the girl from Michigan who won) and really put the focus on her.
Not much mystery here. Valby will lead this trying to get away from closing speed of Kemboi, Plourde, Tyynismaa and Touhy.
Early leaders will be Valby, Venters, Kemboi, Churchill and Plourde. Chasers will be Chmiel, Tuohy, Tyynismaa, Jenks and Baran. Fatigue a big factor for the doublers in the heat. By the 3600 mark Chmiel has the pack at the back of the lead pack of Valby, Kemboi, Venters and Plourde. With 3 laps to go Tuohy overtakes the lead, leaving a group of Touhy, Valby, Venters, Kemboi, Tyynismaa and Churchill. Plourde and Chmiel fade.
On the final lap only Touhy, Kemboi and Tyynismaa remain. Tyynismaa in an upset outsprints Kemboi ftw. Touhy third followed by Valby, Venters, Churchill, Baran and Chmiel hanging on for 8th.
5000U scrapes together 17 points, to make 20 total and barely hang on to nip ARK for combined program of the year.
Surprises: Jenks, Thorvaldson or Maatoug could always pr and get in the scoring. Similarly, Mazza-Downie, Larkin and Logue could bounce back well from 10k, or Ramsden could use victory adrenaline to score again here.
How is Tuohy going to be a factor after that race? Mentally as well. That was rough!

That’s true but probably not applicable to this situation. Conditions in 400 were not favorable to lighter runner like Wilson. And doing that specific double is suicide for any athlete.
Honestly, not gutted for Wilson. Silver in the 400 doesn’t suck, trying the double was a fool’s errand but what the heck, give it a shot. Go for broke!
Big props to her for trying💪
Would a pro even try that double in a major championship?

Makes what Steiner did last year all that more remarkable. What a beast she was.
Just goes to show how hard it is to do well in a few events in track, say when compared to swimming when they line up for finals so close to a previous race and win (or do well) in both or more races.
