Garland is keeping it interesting in the pole vault. He cleared on his third attempt at the last two heights (4.91 and 5.01) to keep pace with Neugebauer. Neugebauer is clearly the better vaulter and will certainly open up at least 30 more points heading into the javelin. Can Garland make up a 200-point (or more) deficit over the last two events?

I think it is over for Garland. Neugebauer has now set two personal bests in the pole vault. Before today, his best was 5.10. He cleared 5.11 on his first attempt and 5.21 on his third. He retired from the PV after this but he outscored Garland by 63 points in the PV. Carrying a 205-point lead into the javelin.

Seriously! Didn’t he graduate high school in 2017??? How does he still have eligibility? And to think he’s coming back in the fall for cross country? How is this possible? Even with the extra Covid year. Time to go pro Casey! Time to move on.

He might have another year after this with the COVID freebie which is when I think posts like this will actually be valid. Y’all remember Peter Callahan? Pretty sure he was at least a 6th year when he was at New Mexico but nobody talked about it much because he wasn’t at BYU.

He is only 24. 6 years hs thru BYU is not abnormal, no? There have been a bunch of athletes older than than 24 in NCAA. Give this a rest.

I’m no decathlon expert, but is 7505 points after 8 events some type of record? Seems like a high score. Neugebauer had a PB in DT, if he can also manage a big PB in the JT, then this will be a big score.

It is a big score. Assuming he does not improve his javelin throw in his next two throws, he will need to run 4:58.7 to tie Garland's collegiate record of 8720.
His best 1500m is 4:42.68 so he should do it. Not sure how much the heat will affect him. The "muscular" decathletes might suffer more than the "skinny" distance runners in a 1500m in these conditions.

There’s no way he’ll run 4:04, but he’s killing this score in college! His 1500 (presumably in a decathlon) is 4:42. Kyle Garland (in second) has the NCAA decathlon record at 8720 points. Leo just has to run a 5:08 1500 to break that college record.
