We have merged two threads into 1 as we like to have 1 thread per topic. We don't need a thread on how she's running the 10,000 and then another on how she did. Here is a video of her on the final lap:
Anyway this race told me what I suspected, which is that she is capable of a really fast 10000m and could probably break the NCAA record if she set her mind to it. She just never wanted to run one. I think this was a recovery run with a good last 1600m kick, but this was super easy for her.
What is she running without her high-end Adidas? 35:00?
Only problem is she didn't know how to handle the water station. Looked like she was asking something, like "Is that water?" She ended up not taking anything as far as I could tell.
Not really a recovery run, it's already 5 days past trackfest, more like tempo/threshold workout with windup close. Real easy mileage tomorrow (school's done now), and I agree w/ other posters that she will run 5k. With Chmiel, Hays and Bush fresh, she may just pace again and find a comfy top 8 spot.
I had never really watched Vestri run, she may be the next 'cuse marathoner, very efficient.
Nice performances by Quarzo and Howlett. Hartman w/ another 4 sec 1500 pr. This again bodes well for the 5-7 xc spots. Shaw squeaked into 1500 final giving state 3 spots.
I was there and she looked like she worked out, but still had plenty left in the tank. She sat on the leader (who was running PR pace) for 6000 meters, mostly clicking off 80-81 second laps. But then after the pace slowed for a couple of 82s, Tuohy had enough. She took the lead with a 79, then started ratcheting the pace down from there, eventually dropping everyone else. The outcome was never in doubt. The only question the last mile was whether she was going to keep dropping the pace, or keep it at 75s and cruise in for the win. She opted for the former and continued to extend her lead all the way to the finish.
This was a workout for tuohy. 5:20 pace for 4 miles then drop it down. I bet she has been running easy after Saturday cause she had to travel home and the meet started on a Thursday. Honestly I think it’s a good move from henes because it won’t burn her.
Also loved seeing Quarzo get 2nd! She seems to be the only other one from that recruiting class to consistently improve and stay healthy the past 3 years(the others being schulz, starliper, walters (who transferred)). Quarzo was 16th at ncaas last year so rooting for her to get closer to the top 10
Will she run the 5000? She seems to have plenty in the tank.
They asked her about the 5k in the post race interview and she said she something to the effect of, she was going to to rest up and 'if the team needs points you've got to show up'. So, I am guessing yes.
Translation: If they have a chance to win, she will run the 5k.

This is a good analysis. It did seem like one part of the plan was to allow Tuohy to recover from her hard effort 5 days ago and still participate in ACCs which are a big deal to NC State, especially when hosting.
The other and more important part of the plan was to help her teammates place high by pacing them for most of the race and then just take off in the last mile to easily secure the win. Just another of so many examples of what a great team player Tuohy is. This reminded me a little of last year’s 5k at the Regional where Tuohy set a perfect pace to help her teammates get all the possible qualifiers to Nationals out of the second heat.
NC State may be in contention for a podium spot in the team competition at ACCs. Fantastic efforts by Quarzo and Howlett to fight for every place! They both moved up a spot late. I believe NC State scored 22 points in the 10k. More of the same coming in the 5k I’m sure.
She should stay in school... Going to get a lot more interest winning NCAA titles... Also should really focus on 1500 next year as you might only need like a 402 to make the US team, while 1430s would be needed in the 5K
Katelyn Tuohy got another standing ovation from the crowd. What will Rojo's excuse for it this time? 😆

I totally agree about Quarzo. Next cross country season she is clearly better than any other team’s number 5 woman. She has made steady progress this entire academic year (all 3 seasons). She also has one 5000 race under 16:00.
No. She was perfectly fine. Gets a very easy effort, gets to shake out the legs from last week, and gets an ACC title. Added bonus, she gets used to a 10000m, which is a great distance for her. Not bad planning.
Did Carter Solomon, who ran in the same meet, get a standing ovation for running 30:18. Performance wise, it was identical to Tuohy’s effort.
Does Carter Solomon run for NC State? It was a home meet for NC State and that’s probably why a standing ovation for Tuohy who is like a legend there at this point.
For all the people gleefully dumping on Tuohy, the SEC 10,000 was won in 35+, and the men's was won in under 30, which is faster than the ACC men's champ.
