My impression with negotiated settlements is that BOTH sides have some fear of losing. Why did Dominion settle?
EXACTLY! What does dominion have to hide? What were they afraid of coming out in discovery 🤔
This does not sound like the actions of a company who has our best interests at heart!
Discovery was over, Magoo. Totally over. Dominion turned over everything Fox asked for, and put all their witnesses up for deposition. Discovery was over months ago. After all that discovery, Fox never even tried to run a defense that it was telling the truth about Dominion.
The settlement was on the day trial was to begin. $787 Million Chings (the Large Green).
Just remember what American 'conservatives' believe these days. Tucker represented them.
A crystallization:
James Surowiecki @JamesSurowiecki Tucker lied all the time. He promulgated Great Replacement Theory, excused January 6, claimed the 2020 election was "a grave betrayal of democracy," and spread lies about the Covid vaccines that encouraged his viewers (many of them old) to go unvaxxed. He's our Father Coughlin.
Am I really reading posts from people who think Dominion settled to AVOID DISCOVERY?
LOL!
Discovery was OVER. It was DONE.
The outcome was that it was established that Fox lied, and whether Fox lied was not even going to be discussed in the trial, as per the judge's pre-trial ruling.
America should politely separate into those who like Tucker and those who like Rachel Maddow. Shake hands. No animosity. Wish each other the best of luck.
I'd welcome that. Take all of your crappy fly-over country with your meth-addict hicks and stop draining the resources of the vastly more productive and economically stable states. Watch it turn into Switzerland and Uganda overnight.
Don’t you constantly b!txh about how LRC is allegedly racist? Isn’t it more offensive to imply an African country is a sh!thole?

Conservative trash ass idiots will do anything to avoid the embarrassment of admitting how dumb they’ve been and how dumb they are.

Dominion settled because it would take years to get their money if it had gone to the trial. Fox would not give up until they exhaust all the appeals. They and their shareholders would rather get $787.5 million today than getting $1 billion five years from now.
Naw, not buying that. Fox had $4 billion cash on hand in Dec. Lawsuit and appeals might have taken a while but not 5 years. Original suit was for $1.6 billion; that's a lot of coin to leave on the table.
Because Dominion's reputation/brand/goodwill was cleared by the judge's findings of fact that Fox published material falsehoods at least 20 times, because Dominion was able to publicly file many of the documents where Fox admitted they deliberately misled people like yourself, and because Fox News promised to hand Dominion a check for $787 million. With all of those goals accomplished, I suspect Dominion decided paying more lawyer bills was no longer good ROI. They got everything they wanted and more.
They got half what they originally sued for. $800 million is WAY more than projected lawyer fees.

Just to clarify, I'm in no way suggesting Dominion had anything to hide. I'm asking why they sued for $1.6 billion, had a seemingly airtight case and settled for a little less than half their original amount.
Good riddance. I never understood the popularity of this guy. Because of him my 80-yr-old Mom's greatest fears are wokeness and Mexicans. Thank the Lord I don't have to listen to him anymore when I visit her.

They came up with the $1.6Bn in damages number by themselves. They probably knew at least half of the damages claimed were iffy at best.

maybe fairer to say that Fox settled to avoid *testimony,* would would have been embarrassing and might have even broken through the right wing media bubble into fox viewers homes.

See, it's hilarious that you'd mention this, because in the process of trying to get me, you're actually outing yourself.
Uganda is a poorly developed country. That's a fact. Why is it so poorly developed? Because of history of colonialism, despotic leadership, and corruption. Adults call that "context".
And when thread after thread after thread talks about a similarly poorly developed area -- such as part of Baltimore or south Chicago -- it ALWAYS appears without any context, such as the effects of redlining, inadequate education, and disproportionate policing. Why do you think that is? Because those posters are interested in having a good-faith argument?
With context, it explains why. Without context, it dogwhistles the implication that the area is only bad because of the demography of the population.
Adults use context. Racist idiots who post on LR don't and for reasons I cannot fathom at all, the Daddy's Money BroJos don't seem to care. It's not that hard to differentiate between the two.

$1.6 billion is an amount that their damages expert came up with, long before trial, as the damages if Dominion won on every defamation count, all of which had to be proven individually. If they lose on any counts, the number goes down. There is no such thing as an airtight case. Defamation is hard to prove, because news networks have the First Amendment and plaintiffs have to prove malice. Getting half of your damages claim without even going to trial -- especially when it's $787million from a mainstream news network for defamation -- is substantial and significant.
When the ink dried on the Settlement Agreement, champagne corks were popping at Dominion, and people were getting FIRED at Fox. There is no way to spin that except as a crushing defeat and capitulation for Fox in every way.

They need to provide company to the millions of old, irrelevant, backwards ass idiots who shoot people over basketballs rolling into their yard since their kids now hate them.
When I read comments about Rojo complaining that his mods are too woke, that's exactly what I think of. Some scared, fearful old dude who used to have political power, but now gets laughed and mocked.
Dunno, exactly. My own New York City doesn't count as one of the most violent, and it's the only one whose demographics I know well.
But--as has been posted endlessly on various threads--the less-violent NYC has a lower homicide rate than the state of Florida, and NYC's population has higher percentages of black and Hispanic residents than Florida does.
So, using some sketchy methodology, I'm guessing the most violent cities--or at least the most violent areas--have more white and Asian people? But that's really just a guess.
Old Dominion is corrupt. They got pills to sue anyone. Not sure why Fox settled. Is that chump change for them? Do they want to protect their privacy by avoiding discovery? I'd love to see what discovery on Dominion would yield. Does anyone know, would Dominion as the plaintiff be subject to discovery?
