I was just talking with a guy on reddit about this, going down the usual line of questioning. I asked him if he thought he was racist and he had a mildly interesting response. I'll copy it here:
"I think it depends on how you define the word racist. I don't hate anyone because of their race nor do I believe in judging people by the average characteristics of their race rather their own individual characteristics, I support equal opportunity and treating people like individuals. For that reason I do not consider myself a racist. That being said I do recognize that some people do use definitions of the word racism that would encompass my beliefs and I accept that under those definitions I am a racist."

Saying that some groups have higher average IQ doesn't mean that everyone from a group with higher average IQ will be smart, nor does it mean that everyone from a group with lower average IQ is dumb.

I mean that is the short explanation? We criticize countries that get new leadership that seak to pretend like something like genocide or slavery never happened. Now we are doing it. Sleeper red state Fla is catching up.

What kind of home life did the typical slave family endure, do you suppose, given how we know they were typically treated daily by slaveowners?
There is simply no way the average person comes out of a situation like that and does well trying to parent their child or couple with a partner.
The flow on from institutionalized slavery and Jim Crow will permeate the culture for centuries. There is simply no way around that, even with the absolute best policy and support anybody can provide.

The African-American family was doing almost as well as everyone else in 1950. How insane do you have to be to think the single motherhood rate went from 20% to 80% between 1950 and today because of slavery...
1950 was not a picnic for african americans. Harder to get a job, education, mortgage....still jim crow in the south. You need a history lesson badly. Poverty affects any race. Black americans have been up against numerous obstacles to building wealth. So they have a much harder time on average to getting out of poverty. Not impossible, but way harder. Still.

Nurture trumps nature. I don’t believe that black individuals are any less capable than any other race. The disadvantage mostly is a factor of parental involvement. It is no great mystery as to why Asian Americans have the highest incomes, highest educational attainment and lowest divorce / illegitimacy rates among the major ethnic groups in this country.
I agree that culture plays a (pretty significant) role, but it's not the entire reason why. For example, Nigerians outperform whites with respect to education in both America and the UK. However, their culture actively promotes education, and getting a bachelor's degree is barely celebrated because the parents expect graduate degrees. However, they're a self-selecting group.
