Whatever the balloon was monitoring, that data was probably transmitted in real time back to China by satellite.
If you watch the start of the shoot-down, you can clearly see a white dot (the capsule carrying the equipment) falling faster than the empty husk of the balloon. As it falls, you can see several bright flashes of light in the first few seconds as sensitive equipment was either ejected or exploded by self destruct explosives. I doubt if we will recover anything significant in the debris.
US says it prevented the balloon from spying. Not sure what that means exactly but it could mean some kind of jamming.
I can't believe the stupidity of Americans. If China wanted to spy on you do you really think they would go through all that trouble of sending a humongous, slow moving balloon that can be easily seen from China, over the ocean that took months, and all across America where anyone could see it? You do know that China manufacturers all your smartphones, right? There are far, far easier, cheaper, and more comprehensive ways of spying on you by just using embedded spy chips in your smartphones to listen in on you and take photos without you even knowing.

We monitored it, jammed its sensors, and gained intel on its capabilities, waited until it was out range where a crash could cause civilian harm, shot it down, and this is what is causing a million MAGAs to lose it.
Now the pentagon needs to release a statement to the effect that 'we regret to report that the US military, who were harmlessly engaging in some fireworks celebrations, accidentally hit and terminated your Chinese meteorical research balloon.'
Would now be a good time to let fox news know that military satellites have been in flight for 40 years and can see visible details of items as small as 7 inches from space?
