So "tangents" is just another way of saying "line"? Like when you watch downhill skiing at the Olympics and the commentators say that the skier chose a "bad line" that will cost him/her valuable tenths of a second.
Maybe she is just not experienced at interviews and still says odd things that we should not take literally. Like when she said she did not know where the finish was. That is ridiculous.

You seem obsessed with Parker Valby. Your obsession is beyond creepy. Like Kevin Spacey in American Beauty creepy. Maybe ask yourself why the obsession?
Touhy ran great to win the title. Valby was a fantastic close second. Two very good runners. No way Tuohy was hanging back and doing anything other than hanging on when Valby pushed out and had a good lead. The race is only 6K. A runner would never willingly let another runner extend a lead like the one Valby had. Valby ran very well as did Tuohy to overtake her and win. The margin at the end wasn't much at all. Looking forward to seeing these two on the track.
Whatever she lost on the tangentss she gained by drafting off the pace cars
At times she was pretty close to those cars which got to give you some nice wind cover
I mean you can argue it anyway but I think the reason she missed a couple of tangents was because she was drafting off the cars
Guess you'd have to be out on the course to figure out how much that actually helped but I think that was the thinking and what she was feeling
Doesn't seem like a bad strategy so I think people are making too much of this
I agree 100%! The reason she missed some of the tangents was because she was drafting off the pace cars! That's got to get back whatever distance she could have gained!

Well, they are also over with their race in 2 minutes. (Tangent is in reality a mathematical term, but I think its a catch all in this thread, as you say).
I think .... some of you are looking at this the wrong way.
First off, I have a bias. I lived in Rockland county for Touhy's entire high school career, and one of my daughter's ran cross country. I'm a fan.
In basically every possible way, Katlyn Touhy is superior to Parker Valby at cross country.
Sorry, Valbymania.
More experienced, better tactician, has help from a really superior team, a year older when at their age is a year better, understands hills, tangents, when to help the team, when to help your self ... yada yada yada
Right now, Touhy is as much better than Valby as she wants to be. But Touhy is polished (NOT finished, NOT the best version of herself, but 'polished') and Valby is raw like sushi.
Outcome:
Parker Valby is the second best American women's college cross country runner, and she's a technical mess. Put Touhy's brain and experience and race awareness in Valby's body, what do you get? Train Valby the 'right' way .... (whatever that is?)
I still take Touhy because, as I said, I'm biased. I've been watching her since before she had guns. But look where Valby IS. She's the second best in the country, and she kind of doesn't have a clue how to race.
she didnt lose this race because she went wide on a few corners.
Didn't you watch the race? It was a lot more than Valby going wide on just a "few" corners.
I just rewatched the race. There was that one obvious flub by Valby, but the rest of the race she ran the tangents pretty well. Saying the tangents made the difference is a totally lame and convenient excuse..
Don't expect either Valby or Touhy to dominate each the other indoors, although I expect Touhy to win more indoors on the short track and 3000m & 5000m distance. Outdoors I give the edge to Valby on the 400m track and 5000m distance. Wouldn't be a contest is Touhy ran against her in the 10000m.
If Valby stays healthy, I give her the edge over Touhy In the outdoors NCAA 5000m and the 10000m is Valby's to loose against any female collegian.

In the post-race interview, Tuohy more or less said she spotted Valby a lead. Based on her finish, "hanging back" is clearly a more accurate characterization than "hanging on" to describe her tactics early in the race.
The reason Katekyn said “Damn” in that session with reporters is because some of you spend way too much time worrying about nonsense. Why are so many of you invested in one of these top female runners? It clouds your objectivity and renders you pathetic fanboys of women who were recently teenagers. Bizarre to say the least.
"Why aren't women's sports more popular, why don't men pay attention to them?".
Men pay attention women sports... "Hey, you are paying attention in the wrong way you weird guys, stop doing that." Men stop paying attention and the fan base goes back down to near zero (because we know women at best only very casually pay attention to any sport, including women's sports).
