I don't know how much more Tuohy had on Friday, but they just put her finishing the Joe Piane on the NC State Instagram and she looks nowhere near as spent as she was in winning the 5,000 in June.
Imagine running 15:50 5k and looking as fresh as you were at the starting line 💀💀💀 NOT EVEN WINDED
Shaw is not in the NC State top five. She wasn't even in their top 7 last year. She was their 6th best in the 5k in the outdoor a few months back (counting Chmiel ahead of her, who was injured during outdoor). Shaw has had much better results on the track than in XC. Assuming Chmiel is somewhat near top form and will be in the top 5 when she gets back, and based on the results from the first two XC meets, at best Shaw is fighting with Howlett and Quarzo for the 6th and 7th spots.
I hope you're right, and that Shaw can put it together in XC this season, and transfer that success from the track. She ran a 16:52 in the Adidas Challenge, 5 seconds ahead of Quarzo. So perhaps if that race was just a rust buster, Shaw could beat out Quarzo and Howlett for that 6th spot. Quarzo is another one that has really made a lot of improvement from last year. Whoever it is, I hope they can get some good quality depth at the #6 and 7 spots, because we don't really know what Chmiel will be able to to do when she comes back....and New Mexico, Alabama, and Oklahoma State have also improved a lot and will be stiff competition to win at Nationals. Seems like this season is shaping up to have some of the strongest teams (and individuals) in the history of the sport. It's going to take an incredibly strong top 5 to win at Nationals.
I am curious about what the impact will be moving from a fairly fast 5k course to a more difficult 6k course in the championship. I think this will definitely favor Chmiel (assuming she is close to 100%) and get her into the top 10. Quarzo would also move up. Tuohy will be fine in any scenario - she is on another level. Strength and speed. Anything can happen of course but as long as she stays healthy and stays on her feet - should be the favorite to win it. Bush ran great last year and is becoming more of a 1500/5000 runner where she used to be more 800/1500 so improved endurance. Starliper is doing great - another comeback story for NC State and on the right track. Seymour is an excellent addition to the team and following in the path of Steelman and Hays (coming from a good but not great team and making a big jump in performance by having stronger training partners now). Hopefully Shaw will be ready. If I remember correctly she was their #5 in the 2020 winter NCAA championship and moved up a lot of places in the last 1k when some others fell back and helped them hold on to 2nd place.

Just looked it up....Shaw was the 5th for the team in Stillwater in March of 2020, in 98th place overall at 21:29. And Sydney Seymour was just behind her in that race in 105th at 21:31. That concerns me with Seymour, and maybe she doesn't perform well on hilly courses? But it appears that Seymour has made a lot of improvement since that time, and Shaw has improved too but probably not as much as Seymour. Last season, Seymour ran a 19:46 6k PR in XC, and based on her result at Piane a few days ago appears to be on track to improve on that this season. Shaw's PR in a 6k race is only 20:48.
I was at the race as well. She was racing and made a strong effort to break away. She was NOT jogging or easing up at the finish, that is simply not true. She wasn’t in a battle where she had to sprint, but she was running very hard and was fatigued as anyone female would be who just ran that pace. Katelyn is not guilty of lying or making up stories after the race, but she was pushing very hard and it showed. Some of you posters like to exaggerate to a staggering level;(
the person that lied about katelyn being exhausted at the finish line had no idea that nc state uploads race finishes days later 😂😂😂 he got 7 people upvote his lie, impressive he had some sad emoji to make it believable hahahhaha

Adam Goucher had a fine college career and reached excellent levels for an American in that era but had anxiety and injury issues that shortened his rise. He was one-time NCAA xc champ, in an era with not a lot of male American xc champs, a two time national champion, and in retrospect, a very, very impressive 6th and 12th place finish in the short course at World XC in 2006 and 1999, respectively. Those are among the best placings American men have had in the past twenty years.
