Hmm, didn't even know the Grammys were on.

Anyone feel like Alica Keys was super awkward and cringy? They just let her ramble up there.

Pop music is, and always has been, a commodity. It makes perfect sense to produce this product as cheaply as possible, and now with modern recording techniques the only thing an entertainer needs is good looks. Can you name any ugly current pop stars?
How about Ed Sheeran, Sam Smith, and Lukas Graham?
They may not be "ugly" but you wouldn't pick them for their looks.
All marketing BS at it's worst level. It used to mean something but now they have so many parties trying to make money off it that it's a giant commercial.

Keys said she was against wearing make-up years ago , didn't want to give in to society expectations.... then she got old ..... and on the make-up train again, like the rest of the 30+ year old women, clinging to there youth .
Honestly, when a 18 year old with fluorescent green hair records an electronic pop album in her bedroom with her brother about suicide and all the pains of life and she wins every major category at the Grammys you know that the music world is in a world of hurt.
Modern day "music" sucks. It just does.

When some dude who calls himself the Captain and goes around in a goofy yachting cap is dropping number one hits, the music world is in a world of hurt.
Love WILL keep us together brother. Factoid.
The Captain and Tennille were to me goofy but the musicianship was really good and what this thread is about, it had feel. I listened to some of the Billie Elish songs after the Grammys and I can't understand how anyone can listen to it. It's soulless. If you do like that music go search out Fleetwood Mac Rumours album. You'll be in ecstasy!

I think the technology of today allows music to be created so easily that it's produced for quick listening.
Art imitates life.
Current generation: attention span of a mayfly, surface level focused (as seen on social media, "reading" online sources (i.e., headlines only), desire for the latest thing regardless of quality), visual is as important, if not more important, than the music.
I don't blame technology in music production. I blame technology for ruining huge aspects of human culture.

These kids today with their Elvis Presley shakin around like he got ants in his pants! That's not music!

I found "Muskrat Love" to be timeless .
I've always thought The Rolling Stones was the worst music I've ever hard. Literally, it's just people randomly making noises with their instruments and somehow everyone thinks it's the greatest band of all-time.
I’m guessing you missed the Billie Eilish performance?

Pop music of the 60s, 70s & 80s stands out because there was a lot of innovation going on. The Clash recorded "London Calling" in 1979. In the same year, you would have heard "Reunited" by Peaches and Herb and "YMCA" by the Village People on the radio just about every hour. If you look at the top 100 for years when bands like The Who, Led Zeppelin, etc. first made it, you will see how these groups blew people's minds just because they were so incredibly new. Today, everything is derivative and there is so little room to be innovative.
I think one of the most remarkable things about pop music today is how little it has changed in the last few decades. A biopic movie about a 1970s rock band became a big box office success two years ago.
If you compare the music from 1940 and 1980, there is much bigger difference than between 1980 and 2020. The world is changing faster in almost everything else. In pop music, it is changing more slowly.

The Archies?! They were a cartoon band, bro. Plus who doesn't love "Sugar, Sugar"?
Def Leppard made millions and the #1 video of the late 1980s from ripping off that song.
I have a sick weird feeling that Lil Nas X is the next Milli Vanilli
you guys are all horrible
There are literally thousands of musicians producing great music right now.
The issue is music that becomes "popular" is either stuff produced by music execs for mass consumption or music that get a huge following online and make it to the top. So you can blame those two groups for ruining your day.
