Not sure I would agree given that the 2016 trials were very slow due to the heat. If the race was fast and the winning times were 2:22-23, then I would give the advantage to vapor fly. But vapor flys don't make you cooler when it is hot. That was the issue in 2016.

The fact that Desi finished second, wearing standard Brooks racing flats, and beating Shalane, who was wearing the Nike prototypes, kind of discredits Kara’s assertions. I don’t believe that Brooks had started development of their VaporFly-type shoe yet, at the time of the 2016 Trials. So Desi was at the same “disadvantage” that Kara was, yet kicked Kara’s butt and made the team.

So while Nike’s shoes may have given their runners an advantage, that wasn’t the sole reason Kara didn’t make the team that year.

Every reason is a good reason for Kara to cry.

Desi would have never won Boston , except that she had a better, lighter rain jacket . If the Canadian masters women, had this jacket , and Desi wearing a 5lbs jacket , the Canadian would have won. Light jackets are like EPO.

Yes.

I bought the same jacket 2 days before at the expo and wore it on Marathon Monday.

Ritz had them that day, didn’t help with his heat cramping issue ? I am convinced that if Puskedra had worn them he would have made the team and changed his career. Not sure if he was offered them or not as he was with Nike then, but may not have trusted a new shoe. He wore some really thin flats that day and he isn’t the lightest guy around.

+1 Didn't the a author approach her? She's not whining. She's asserting what is quite likely true. Y'all are crybabies.

These shoe complaints threads/posts whether by recreational or elite runners are getting very out of hand.

People fail to realize that Nike sponsors 80-90% of top-elite runners. So naturally, 80-90% of top performances will be done in Nike shoes. There have been many races recently where runners destroyed entire fields of Next%s and even set world records in OTHER shoes. Then LRC typically says "doping!" Kipruto is doping! Kipchumba is doping! Geb was doping! No, they were just part of the 10% of elite-pros who are not using Nike shoes, and win around 10% of the time.

The shoes work great for hobby runners, and athletes who are not racing to the complete maximum. Thinking the shoes makes someone faster can allow them to push harder mentally and reach better times, but it's not superior technology.

Using them as excuse as pro is very weak, but then again I do think that Goucher truly believes the shoes are what makes the difference. It's just not true.

She is absolutely correct in what she is saying, Nike tried to cover it up by making it look like a Zoom streak colour. If they had nothing to hide they wouldn't be doing that. Unfair advantage clearly and not a level playing field.

The reporter should have asked Goucher if she would have worn the shoes if she were still with Nike in 2016.
