Obviously Tom looks classy and Bill looks like a slob. Furthermore, tom is classy and Bill, maybe not as much.....even though Bill is probably GOAT coach.
That said, it's a sporting event, not a business meeting or church.

* I think most college football coaches have it right these days. This outfit works for basically all sports in my opinion. Chinos (probably stretchy/modern fabric), polo style shirt with team logo, running shoes and a ball cap if it's sunny. That's the perfect balance to me. You don't look like a slob, yet you recognize you're at a sporting event and not a board meeting. Wearing a suit at a basketball game seems totally out of place to me (like wearing shorts and flip flops to a traditional business meeting).

The NBA requires a suit and tie for coaches. NCAA does not.
Maybe too many of you are attending D3 meets. Every coach that I see at a track meet is wearing dress slacks, dress shoes, and a collarded shirt.

It’s ridiculous that they have to put leafy greens on their shirts.
Basketball is inside, so the coaches dress how grown men dress when indoors and not participating in athletic activity.

Like it was said earlier--it goes back to player-managers. I think it's a good tradition, it's a part of the sport. There are so many coaches on the sidelines that their number indicates who person is to umpires and announcers. If both teams have 3 coaches/ managers wearing a suit, that is 6 people that will end up looking like a reporter, or someone who should not be on the field.
as far as it being a boring excuse of a sport...you're welcome to come to my batting cage and try to hit 100mph. I forgot why i started running in the 9th grade: because i couldnt' throw a fastball or field a line drive. running is way easier than baseball.

Exactly, basketball is indoors. Case in point. During the indoor season you seen more coaches dressing in slacks and dress shoes. They still may wear a team polo or jacket but you see much nicer attire during the indoor season. This is the main reason.
bball coaches are more visible to the crowd (indoors, confined to one space) and are actively involved in the athletic competition (they can call time outs, make substitutions, receive technical fouls, etc.) They are also only directing 5 players on the court at one time, so the relative role they play is enhanced over other sports such as football.
Bball coaches have more interaction with referees, and a suit helps them appear as more respectful.
Plus they sweat a ton during games, being emotionally and physically involved (standing, pacing) in a warm indoor arena. The jacket helps hide the sweat soaked shirt underneath.
Spectators do not pay any attention to track coaches
D1 coaches always dress nice, indoor or outdoor. I realize that most posters ran D3, but you can at least watch some real meets online before posting.

A long time ago I read that baseball coaches are actually on the roster and COULD play- so the tradition of wearing a uniform.
You are asking the wrong question.
The correct question is why don't basketball, football, and track/field coaches wear proper uniforms like baseball managers? I want to see Belichick suit up in full pads, Steve Kerr put back on a uniform, etc.
The games would be so much more entertaining that way.
