The author of the below article makes all the major points:
1) All running shoe foams and plates are all technically springs
2) Springs return some percent of energy put into them, they don't create energy.
3) The vaporfly and next% are simply better versions of shoes and offer the same advantages of all other shoes: cushioning at the sacrifice of energy return, but offer more cushioning and energy return in comparison.
4) It's not "unfair" if you can go to the store and buy the shoes.
I really don't see anything overly dramatic about what she said. Seemed pretty objective and reasonable to me.

The premise of the article is stupid. Des has really never been one to shy away from saying what she wants. Throughout most of her career she has been kind of an outlier. She said what she wanted about Dathan, she said other controversial things throughout the year.
Notice she doesn't mention her joke of a win in Boston. you don't think she had technological advantage that day.

Say what you want folks, but Des Linden is only getting asked her thoughts because 50k people wanna run the NYC marathon - and the more people that wanna do it (or that they feel like they have a "new life" in them because of 4%), the better off this sport is....
You can embrace technology or not. But likely you made your personal life easier with an iphone vs. a Motorola Razr so I don't see why one would not want to extrapolate in all aspects of life. Let your 10K PR from your college days go. It doesnt matter, set a new one and move on.
Apparently this is her quote from the article which is now apparently the QOD:

For the most part, it's almost explicitly clear that she's just upset that she didn't get to use this technology in her prime.
I highly doubt that she cares at ALL about "something different happening right now", because there has not been a single instance in which she has commented about changes in track surfaces, changes in training, or changes in shoe technology up until this point. If she actually felt this way, we most certainly should have heard her routinely praising the Snells, Ryuns, and Ronos of the world who had to run with inferior variants of all 3 to different degrees.

There has never been "clean" sport of any sort, technology and knowledge that athletes from the past lacked has always resulted in improved performances for current-day athletes, nations have invested in programs to make their athletes better than those of other nations for decades, and WADA has former athletes who slept in altitude tents working for them.

In reference to her kind of dig on Shalane's 2017 win. Does anyone know if the 2nd and 3rd placers had Vaporfly's that day. Even if you take Shalane out of the 4% I have a hard time believing anyone from 4th on back has any shot of beating her. I'm not even sure 2nd and 3rd would have. You never know what happens when you change a variable like that but Shalane won fairly convincingly and after the top 3 there was a big gap.
I stopped paying attention to Desi when she took the cheap shots at Rupp and Hasay, a few years ago. In fact, I stop paying attention to all of the runners who smear other runners with zero evidence other than the other runners superior results. Now, she is making the idiotic argument that older runners records are being diminished because equipment is being improved. What's next? Older runners records are being diminished because the science around nourishment is advanced and the new runners are eating better? Older runners records are being diminished because the population is greater now so there are more runners running? In every single human endeavor, things are better due to scientific advancements. I was a big Desi fan when she first broke out but she has made herself irrelevant to me. Her and a lot of other cheap shot artists, for that matter.
There are two different things competitive runners pay attention to:
times/ records, and place/wins.
New everything (shoes, nutrition, training, tracks, etc.) will help runners eclipse the historical times of the past. There is always, and will always be, "something different" happening at any point in time.
But you cannot take away how well you placed against others.
I respect Des, her consistent results (both times and places) and her willingness to speak out.
I believe her statements are not complaining about the new shoes.
She has the perspective to realize that there is always something different happening, and her very good times from the past are not looking so good now.
Good for her that she had that Boston win, 2nd at Boston, made those Olympic teams, etc.
I believe she is realizing that people will not be very impressed by her times in the future.
But times and records are still important. Not so much historically but they are relevant to the era during which those times were achieved. Top times, course and world records are still coveted, because they indicate that in that era, those runners were some of the best. Those that set course or world records beat the historically best times. But those record times will be eclipsed in the future.
