High school athlete disqualified at cross-country meet for wearing hijab

For our state meet, it’s was 20 degrees with light snow. Very icy course. Officials would not let me wear cap, tights or gloves because they didn’t match our school uniform. They had to be same colors. I understand why the rule is there, but still think it’s silly for certain weather conditions.

As was mentioned, a hijab has changed from being a religious covering into a cultural one. If it’s a cultural covering, it shouldn’t be allowed.

Some quick internet searches make it look like she may have been wearing pants too, but of course, that doesn't make as good of a story now does it. Oh and then there's the part about her not even being a student at the school she was running for....

This whole story is a mess.

What's idiotic is that they even care so much what kids are wearing during a race.

A few years ago our school had a girl disqalified for wearing a livestrong bracelet. She started the race with a long sleeve shirt so it was hidden. During the race she pulled up the sleeves when she got warmed up making it visible. Does any sensible person think this or a girl wearing a hijab make any difference whatsoever?

The obvious answer is no.

Of course this should be expected from a state that has a xc state meet course that every coach and fan in the state hates because it is so spectator unfriendly and the decision makers are too stubborn or stupid to do anything about it.

Actually you are allowed to wear it. You just need to get an exemption for it which she and or her coach failed to do.

It's a HS XC race! How does what one wears on their head give anyone and advantage or disadvantage?

HS xc uniform rules are over the top. The only rule should be that your team you run for is identifiable on the front and back of the jersey. Isn't that all that matters when it comes to the actual race? If a school wants to make rules about how it is represented in public which could dictate what racers wear, then that is up to the school. but the governing bodies of track and XC need to focus on putting on a race with an even playing field and stop being uniform cops.

That's a different discussion but this is a child in the US. I think it's fine to let kids be raised by their parents until adulthood, at which point they're allowed to make their own decisions (unless they're being harmed). I don't see how some sort of religious garb is actively harming a child. It's just a shame they couldn't have let her just run the race.
