While Vaporfly are great for running marathons, there’s a lot more to the falling cutoff times than just the shoes. Nobody who is seriously trying to qualify for Boston is going to feel comfortable getting less than 5 minutes under the BQ time. They’re setting bigger goals, training harder, hiring coaches, seeking out fast courses and yes, buying $250 shoes, so they don’t have to fear that they might not make the cut. The uncertainty about the cutoff becomes a self fulfilling prophecy. Eventually the qualifying standards might get hard enough that people stop trying but right now it’s still in the realm of hard but attainable for many people.
