1) Galen has never been a great interview. Personally I haven't tried to ask him questions for a couple years as I didn't like Alberto acting like I was the bad guy.
2) A lot of people aren't going to like it when he falls back on talking points instead of just answering the questions.
"I just want to talk about the race. I've released a statement" is going to piss some people off.
Even "I haven't had any sport related contact with Alberto" instead of "this is really tough. This guy is like a father figure to me" is going to piss people off.
PR wise it might be the way to do it, but from a human perspective some aren't going to like it.
If you were to compare this to the typical Belichick interview you would see a lot of commonality - let's keep the questions on topic, focused on the competition, not commenting on that extraneous stuff, etc...
Yeah, not everyone loves Bill or the Patriots either (including me), but they seem to get the job done. Focus is an important part of that.
Do I want to see him answer the hard questions straight up? Yes. A day or two before the race? Would have been nice, but kinda wishful thinking.
