In a selection scenario it would have made at least some sense to not select 2013 Kenenisa because of the injury recovery. Hindsight is 20/20 re: Great North that year, sure. In a selection scenario you do not pick newcomer 12:52 Bekele over Kejelcha. Ever.

What you wrote makes sense...however, what Ethiopia does for selection doesn't always make sense so wouldn't be surprised if Kejelcha wasn't named to the 5,000m team (wouldn't be surprised if he was either)

in 2013 Bekele still won the 10,000m at Pre...not super fast, I recall around 27:10 but still beat other top Ethiopians that were later named to the team like Merga, Kuma (??) and top Kenyans.

Agreed, it could go either way. Hard to be surprised by anything they choose at this point.

Strawman as much as you want, but I’ve never used a single criteria for ranking athletes, the opposite actually. While many others place less emphasis on taking chances and risking failure I hold these characteristics in very high esteem. So I do give an extra nod to fast times or gutsy attempts where others may default to medal accumulation without as much respect paid to the manner in which they’re earned and over whom they are won.

It is really a case of pre and post ABP.

Keljelcha is not winning Gold in any scenario.

Cheptegai is running the 10,000m in Doha.

A repeat loser is likely to be passed up for a spot, especially when they have another one locked.

He has “no other qualities” other than being a better kicker than Mr. 3:47i. Barega and Gebrhiwet are better than Kejelcha at both 5k and 10k regardless of his supposed speed and strength. Bekele is the same, at least at 5k. Dredge up all the marks you want; Kejelcha’s position on the Ethiopian hierarchy is clear.

Why wouldn’t Edris, the one with a free wildcard and poor fitness, be the obvious sacrificial lamb? And if the Ethiopians can crush Cheptegei in a kick (as we’ve seen) OR a fast race (like you’re suggesting), why would they care at all about the pace? It’s completely irrelevant.
