Jim will go out hard at the Trials and try to time trial a 2:11:29. He is hoping that others let him go due to the undulating nature of the course and his unproven record at the marathon.
He won't succeed, but he will get his sponsor a lot of attention from the race even if he only makes it 10 or 15 miles.
Before the new 2:11:30 standard was announced, I think Jim had some chance of making the team (because Houston will be hot and hilly - his specialty).
However, I don't believe he is capable of running 2:11 at the Trials no matter the conditions. He probably feels the same. He's made it clear that the Trials will be his debut marathon, so he can't try to run 2:11 anywhere earlier to get the standard. So, he will sacrifice himself to try to solo a 2:11 at the Trials - no matter how slim his chances.
