What a load of bollocks. It is not "just like" the college admissions scandal, where life trajectories are set in place for life.

This is _running_ for gosh sake. Who cares if someone cuts a corner to run in 4:29 rather than 4:31? Trying to make this seem like stolen valor or something is "just a bit" (way) over the top.

"Stolen valor" is over the top already. 80% of troops are non combat positions, and obviously a higher percentage never see combat even if that is the rule they trained for.

I had a coworker who loved to brag at work and post constantly about his military service. I finally asked him what he did, and he was an MP in Germany...

The stolen valor thing came about due to a certain world famous cheater who's name we are no longer allowed to use on the LR forum (but it is mentioned in the WP article).

He carried on about wanting to honour the military personnel while running for them and his family, etc, etc, ad nauseum. It was pointed out to him that his intricate, well planned, with video, monumental cheat wasn't dissimilar to stolen valor and the lengths those people go to, i.e. gained by dishonest nefarious means by an inadequate person.
