Salazar Speaks Out -- good read

alberto salazar is a slimeball to the core. he's never to be trusted. if he was a ncaa coach, he'd soon yank all scholarships except the one to galen. at central catholic, the guy didn't care about the entire team, only one runner, galen rupp. this guy isnt a coach. he's just hanging on the coattails of major talent.

What was even worse, in my opinion, was his willingness to badmouth Smith and U of Oregon program in the press to increase the pressure. There was a USA Today story, and one in the Oregonian that I remember where Salazar was only too happy to blab about his criticisms.

You could make the argument (as Salazar himself does) that as an alum, he had a right to lobby the AD to fire the coach (he should, however, also admit that this lobbying involved pressure, financial and otherwise). But what purpose was served by tearing down the program in the newspapers, other than making it harder for Smith to do his job?

Tell me more, oh "Eye-on-Oregon", about this "Duck Illustrated", Jerry Thompson and Steve Tannen...if you will.

My sense is that neither does AL Salazar speak like that nor would he want to be as public with his thoughts or feelings about the matter at this time. I smell something rotten but can't put my finger on it...

Ducks Illustrated is a legitimate publication for which Steve Tannen normally does the feature articles. I recall an edition that came out during Western Regionals in Eugene. The edition focused on many of the Oregon athletes, many of who gave effusive praise and support for their (deposed) coach Smith. It was a bit embarassing to some of the (unnamed) UofO Athletic Dept. folks who had already jumped onto the other side of the boat to join in on the Smith bashing. The buffoons didn't know what to say with this paper plastered all around Hayward Field, and full of positive stuff for Smith.

Spinney,are you saying that you don't believe Salazar made these comments? I would like to believe that he didn't make the statements because if he did, wouldn't you have to agree that it shows him out as an unsavory character?

If Salazar did not make these inane comments, then the "article" is nothing more than incendiary fabrication of Eyeonoregon and he ought to be banned.

Honestly, I'll reserve judgement and agree that if indeed "Eye" created it he deserves to be called on the carpet for it.

Only ONE FORCE in the Universe (next to the Highest of course) can solve this problem....

In the U of O case someone's rep has been besmirched & a college athletic dept is in disarray, versus putting a CIA officer (Valerine P. and her associates and contacts in the field) at risk of being killed for sheer spite to get 'even' with Ambsr. Wilson???

Karl Rove should be in prison. Al, if he indeed is involved in the mess at Eugene, merely needs to be ashamed.

This tone seems to be echoing throughout this great land.

We could demand a stop be put to it, if we really cared.

It's unethical to not donate money to a cause you no longer support? If the cancer research you donated money (I say you, but you're probably sucking on your mommy's tit still and couldn't and wouldn't donate money to begin with) began doing types of research that you didn't condone, would you still donate money to the cause because of 'ethics'?

Hayward, I agree with you in that we all have the perfect right (obligation?) to withhold money from programs that we don't agree with. What is being debated here is not that issue, at all. What is being debated is AlSal's statements that the orchestrated withholding of annual donations from the Lame Ducks, led by AlSal (and Phil K) were not in fact intended to put pressure on Moos to fire Martin Smith. We all know that is exactly what the intent was and that it did accomplish the intended. I think we expect more from a Nike chief than this--if the man had a backbone, he would admit what was going on.

Sorry, if I was not clear: The "Nike chief" that I referred to was AlSal (definitely not Phil as he would have the guts to admit it if he took on something like this).

Also, my comments are caveated with the assumption that AlSal actually said these things that are attributed to him in the Ducks Illustrated article.

AlSal cares..AlSal does things others wont do..AlSal is a doer in a world of complainers...quit crying ...Nike cares about the track and xcountry program at Oregon..they would like 10,000 in the stands...no other school would sincerly attempt that

I see what you're saying, and I agree. I don't have as negative a view of Salazar as some, but I do agree that to pretend their (Salazar, Knight, etc.) actions weren't designed to pressure UofO into firing Smith is inaccurate.
