As a foreigner who was a full ride here, I can confirm that we seldom take ourselves as seriously Americans. I don't know how you Americans run with that stick up your butt.

Irish and Australians for example are about joking, drinking and racing. We never worried about the degree, and life after sport.

I am not saying you were / are a dick, but being from an earlier era, I'm saying you were just being an average American. Not a lot of humor. Uncomfortable and exclusionary when you first meet a stranger. Totally opposite to Healy. He was treating you like you were a friend, and you found that cocky. I can assure you that you would never have behaved that way with strangers. Due to that massive stick up your butt.

I met him at penn relays 95 i think? we were hanging out with him and shannon butler. he was funny and drinking as much as the rest of us. lots of runners hate the outgoing alpha type and call them dicks.... he was just outgoing and confident with the ladies as i recall.
