A t-shirt is excellent for defense.
With dogs, hold the t-shirt on the ends, and offer the dog the middle. When it latches on, circle the ends around its neck. Pull up sharply (may not be possible with a very large dog). Usually you can snap their neck.
With the mountain lion, I'd wrap the shirt around my fist, and feed it into the lion's mouth. Shove it as far down as you can, cutting off its airway.

Props to him. I'm guessing 9 times out of 10 the mountain lion wins.

What? That's a terrible statement. Not happy to see a mountain lion get killed, but the dude obviously did what he had to do and is a badass for doing it, but still nothing to be happy about.

Impressive stuff. Having run that trail many times over the years, I am not surprised about the attack, as that is serious mountain lion country (lots of deer and lots of rocky outcroppings). Although the worst I ever encountered was rattlesnakes on that trail. My guess is the guy is a former ram. We're just a little tougher in Colorado. Considering a cat can disembowel you with their claws, he was very fortunate.
